Hi,
I am fairly new to the DVD backup business. I purchashed a copy of "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" starring Jim Carrey and decided to make a backup. I decrypted with DVD Decryptor and then I have been shrinking the DVDs with DVD Shrink, but this time I ran into an error. Before the file even gets past 1% encoding, an error occurs. The movie just came out today so I'm wondering if it is some sort of new technology to block backups or what? Anyone have a solution for me? Thank you for your time!

Hates to be, but Steelyjay is correct - Shrink can't do its compression thing on the title Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. He's not doing anything wrong - it's just one of authoring schemes Shrink can't handle.
I tried just using Shrink alone - it failed on the first file during compression stage. So I tried Decrypter first, to give it a decrypted image to read - Shrink failed at exactly same place as before.
I just used some other compression software (an old ripper version of DVD Xpress), which worked fine.

I'm still having problems backing this DVD up. If anyone has a program that will work, please let me know. I can't afford to pay for another DVD program so I need something free.

I backed up this DVD with no problems using DVD Shrink. I did have Anydvd running in the background, so this might have been the secret. This program costs money, so you might want to try DVD43 and see if it helps. I have also found that sometimes older versions of shrink will sometimes do a movie that the new one won't. By old I mean V2.3 or V3.0B5 or something like that. If you want to try an older version and can't find them just PM me your e mail address and I can send them as an e mail attachment.

You can also try reading with decrypter and then using those files in shrink 3.2, if it still doesn't work then try using your burner to read and use a slow speed like 1x.
As dave suggested use anydvd, i don't think dvd43 will solve your problem. The new anydvd beta has a new setting to get around hard disc read errors, which is yes, a new way to prevent dvd backup. Though it has been used in other media for a while it seems to be becoming more and more popular in DVD's as of late.
I used this method on Ned Kelly, which has read errors in the VTS_01_3 files and this worked getting around it. You can get the beta anydvd at the homepage, also anydvd has a 21 day free trial period. The setting to check is : "copy protection based on unreadable sectors"
I will be getting this movie in the next day and i will tell you for sure if that's the problem(hard disc read error), but you can get around them-that's the good news. :)

BTW, I wouldn't ever give up on DVD Decrypter, try the following little "adjustments".
Step 1. In DVD Decrypter, go to "Tools", "Settings", and then whatever you're using either the File Mode tab OR the ISO Read Mode tab and "tick" "Remove PUO's" - try either the IFO, BUP, PUO's OR the VOB PUO's
Step 2. In DVD Decrypter, go to "Tools", "Settings", General tab, on the bottom left it will say "Removal Method" choose "Aggressive".
Step 3. in DVD Decrypter, go to "Tools", "Settings" then choose the CSS tab, under CSS Cracking Method, mark the spot that says "Brute Force -> I/O Exchange".
These "adjustments to DVD Decrypter should "Crack" just about anything out there today EXCEPT the ARccOS copy protection.

There seems to be a trailer in the first VOB that causes problems. Another poster came up with this suggestion;
There's some stupid video in VIDEO_TS.VOB where some kid jumps in the air, played over and over.
DVDSHRINK cannot handle this video.
I told it to replace that with its Still Image.
It had no trouble working with the rest of the material.

I was able to decrypt the movie first with DVD Decrypter then encode with DVD Shrink no problems. When I get home I will burn movie to disk and then update everyone as to my results.

Thanks to everyone for your advice.
I ended up downloading the old version of DVD Shrink and that worked just fine. I now keep both versions of DVD Shrink in my folder incase I run into another such DVD.

I first ran into this problem with "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre". Shrink would fail immediately after analysis started. Decrypter worked, but shrink still could not process the files. I tried Shrink V2.3 and there were no problems. I believe ScubaPete said that V3.0b5 worked for him. I always keep these two old versions just for this purpose.

Hi Everyone,
After seeing all the problems that everyone was having with this "Bad Boy", I ordered this movie and it should arrive by post either tomorrow OR Monday. I look forward to playing with it myself :)
Also, because of all the ruckus this DVD seems to have caused I spent some time over at the DVD Digital Forum with their "Super Moderator" to see how they were handling it. As forkndave reported, using an earlier version of DVD Shrink seems to be the answer. When members there have trouble they switch to the 3.1.7 version of DVD Shrink and it seems to do the trick. It's my understanding that Mr. DVDShrink is being queried to see if he changed the ripping code when he modified the 3.1.7 DVD Shrink to the 3.2.0.15 version.
I'll keep ya'all up to date on it if I find out anything :)

I can't back this up either.
First, I tried DVDShrink 3.1.7 and it didn't work. I figured it had some kind of copy protection, and upgraded to 3.2 thinking that maybe it could handle it. Still, nothing. I found this site, and downloaded AnyDVD. Tried it with DVDShrink 2.3, and that didn't work. I've also tried DVD Decryptor. I'm so frustrated.
Update:
As of a few minutes ago, I succesfully copied the main video and audio. There are no menus and special features. It's the only way I could get it to work . . .

Now, isn't that strange? I just did the movie and watched it, with shrink 3.2 and with no problems whatsoever. I mean none.
I then used DVDCopy 2 and anydvd and guess what, again no problems. I have ripped it with decrypter and plan on running it thru RB/CCE later tonite, but I don't expect any problems, it went thru decrypter just fine.
Why do some have problems and others don't using the same software and the same movie?
Afterthought; I did have problems with Ned Kelly and it turns out it had the new hard read errors that is being used as of late. Only instead of being at the beginning as most are they put it in the middle in the VTS_03_1 file. But using the new anydvd with it's hard read error bypass and reading at 1x solved the problem.
It also turns out not all the Ned Kelly discs even had the read error. Go figure ;>)

what solutions have actually worked for people?
i have anydvd running, i've tried DVD Shrink 3.1.7 and nothing is working. during the analysis the boy jumping intro doesn't read properly, just loops-even if i've selected as a compression option "still images."
i just plain don't know what to do for this. is there any one method that has been discovered to work?

estockme, did you check anydvd's option "copy protection based on unreadable errors"?
Also, have you tried to read it at 1x or maybe use your burner to read it if your DVD ROM drive won't read that slow?

i'm using decrypter to put it in a folder on my hard drive. it seems to be working, got past the file that it usually failed on and is 40% done. once i'm that far, do i open the files with DVD Shrink? will it still get caught up on the boy jumping?

Howdy All,
As promised I have gotten the Eternal Sunshine of the Perfect Mind this afternoon. I put it straight away in the PC expecting to have a tough night of it - I'm using DVD Shrink 3.2.15 and running in the background is AnyDVD with the new upgrades. I ripped the DVD, encoded it processed it with Deep Analysis and DVD Shrink's Quality Enhancement set on Maximum Smoothness and was finished in 2 hours and 22 minutes, without a single hitch.
I'm now thinking that it might be a manufacturer's error in an entire pressing.
Here are some "Tips" that might help you but I have no exact suggestion -
Begin by playing your DVD with your PC's player. Play for two or three minutes then open your DVD Shrink, as soon as you begin your rip turn off your player so it doesn't interfere. The playing before hand is only so that your ripping program can "Find" your DVD.
Should that not work, Download DVD Decrypter and rip the DVD in the "ISO" mode.

When ripping in the "default" setting doesn't work, go to "Tools", "Settings", "File Mode" then "tick" Remove PUO's" then click "OK" and endeavor to rip again.
When even the DVD Decrypter fails to rip your DVD try SmartRipper.

Sometimes another specialist is all that's required.

ScubaPete dug into his bag of tricks and came up with these suggestions (iffin ya use these you should be able to breat your local Bank )

Hello to all,
I played the movie for a few minutes and then ran Decrypter 3.5.1.0 on it, I saved the movie to the hard drive. I did not encounter any problems.
I used Remake Pro 2.5.0 to edit and followed this with Nero Recode to compress and burn.
Watched it last nite, no probs. As an added note, I do not have AnyDVD running in the background.

I tried two versions of DVD Shrink and it failed each time. I then used DVD Decrypter and it ripped the files just fine. But DVD Shrink failed again. I had both the newest version of Anydvd and DVD Ghost running.
Then I tried my trusty DVDXcopy and it ripped and recorded just fine while using AnyDVD again.

I cannot believe that DVD Shrink could fail at that point unless you've got a setting set improperly.
The only place that DVD Shrink can mess up isin the ripping. Recheck your settings, it's probably something simple, it usually is - Lol, I've done it myself, too many times
