fusionZ, when you say shrink failed, at what point did it fail? Did you get an error message, if so what? A little more info, anything you can think of, would really help in analyzing your problem.
Are you using the quality settings?
Also are you doing any editing or re-authoring?
Are you burning with decrypter? If so, do you have the enable burn with nero UNchecked?
Finally what brand media are you using?
Also, I would suggest using an RW til you get it right, then burn to a R to save on coasters. :>)

Sorry for the confusion. Shrink stopped as it started the encoding process. Both versions and even after Decrypting it to a file. The error:
DVD Shrink encountered an error and cannot continue. Programming error-exception occurred. The handle is invalid.
My settings are fine. I have burned 175 DVD's using Shrink and Nero.

If you were trying to burn with decrypter and ISO, the error "handle is invalid" will come up if the enable burning with Nero box is checked.
If you were trying to burn with Nero did you have your burner checked as target destination in the window under target device. If you had anything else selected, again, "handle is invalid" will appear.
Once decrypter has managed to rip the files, shrink shouldn't have a problem encoding them. Did you try it with anydvd running with the "copy protection based on unreadable sectors" checked?
If you don't have anydvd, you can get it for a 21 day trial to get around this if you don't want to buy. I use it a lot, it is the best of the on the fly tools and getting around encryption problems.
You are going to see more and more of this in the near future as a way to prevent DVD backup. :>)

One other thing I just thought of, I didn't have a problem with this movie so I don't know for sure, but I heard the hard copy read error is in the front of the movie in extras or unreferenced.
There are a couple of ways around this. You can substitute still image for the offending file only by hitting on the + mark in extras and go to the file.
You can substitute still image for all extras at once.
Or you can re-author and do movie only. This last option will cost you menu function but if the 1st two don't work it is a way to still get the movie.
You can find the file by using your decrypter log and then preview it in your shrink preview window. :>)

Wow, you guys ROCK! I've been using DVD Shrink and Nero for the past month. I just borrowed "Eternal Sunshine" and had my first failed encryption.. within the first 1% (like everyone else). Well, I hopped over here and wouldn't you know- you all have already figured it out for me!!
I set the "Kid kicking" extra to still image and I am now at 46% encoded. That extra is located in the "unreferenced materials" folder.
This shrink is taking much longer than I am used to, but it's working all the same.
Thank you all for your diligence in solving these matters!! Keep up the good work!

this one should stump you all... Consider it a challenge scuba steve. lol
Ok. I finally got eternal sunshine to copy by using dvd2one to shrink the files and then using nero recode 2 to burn it to disk. (tried shrink after dvd2one and it failed) It played on my computer. I have made 6 coasters over this one movie.
Here is the kicker: My sony said "dirty disk" and would not play it. (will still play other dvds) My Toshiba piece of junk played it perfectly. How 'bout them apples?
Forgot to mention that my sony plays all of the previous 150 dvds that I've made whereas the toshiba rarely plays any.

kranecu,
not "stumped" at all,LOL I have found that cheap players tend to play backups much better than the more expensive ones.
I have a 65.00 Philips that plays everything and a 500.00 Onkyo carousel that's "picky" as hell.
In perusing the threads I've seen it time and time again.
There is one puzzling part tho, that it wouldn't play any of the others unless it's a compatibility issue. ;>)

Yea, what my Good Buddy Big "O" said, as far as that DVD, it was NBD, I had zero difficulity. Maybe it was a pressing defect, Yea ?
I have a Cyber-Home DVD player ($39.99 (USD) with a $10.00 rebate form, $29.99 and it will play a small dinner plate AND shoot it out cleaned :)
And who the Heck is Scuba "Steve" ???

lol... I think that scuba steve was the boys toy on big daddy. Adam Sandler even dressed up like it. (unless that was scuba pete too) Maybe I should just lay off of the crack... Pardon the mistake.
anyway, what about the fact that my sony has always played everything perfectly whereas the toshiba has always sucked. Now, with this dvd, the sony says "dirty disk" and the toshiba plays it perfectly.
I agree with what you're saying. The sony was only $80. I think I found the model number for it recommended on this site for being the best at playing burnt dvds.

I am in the middle of ripping Eternal Sunshine with DVD Shrink 3.2 right now. I had gotten the same error many others have posted, as soon as the encoding starting.
Try Re-Authoringwith DVD Shrink and do the main movie only, leave out the menus and extras. I like having the menus typically, but sometimes you just gotta let them go.
I am at 57% encoding... should work fine.

I had no problems w/ Eternal Sunshine by using CloneDVD w/ Anydvd. But doesn't CloneDVD incorporate the Shrink program?

Hi rjames,
CloneDVD2 encodes differently than DVD Shrink but both do a pretty good job. With DVD's that require compression over 80% it's my opinion that DVD Shrink, using the Deep Anaylsis and Maximum smoothness does by far a better job. The winner's ribbon goes to DVD Shrink:).
and that's my opinion,
Cheers,
Pete

Had same problem...just choose "Still Image" for the "unreferenced item" underneath the "extras" item from the list. Apparently that's where the copy protection is. Encoding "Eternal Sunshine..." as I'm typing this & no problems anymore.

Hey, hey jewelFan,
Quote: it is too big by like 30-40megs.
What size did you set DVD2One to that makes the DVD too big ?
I've put 4 different DVD's on a single disc using DVD2One, so I'm wondering, why you couldn't get just 1 large DVD on there -
BTW,
By running it through DVD Shrink you don't have to lose extras, just compress them under "Custom Ratios" to the max, allowing better quality for the main feature. The small "dancing" man that causes soo much trouble doesn't effect your extras or any of the extras languages (in case you want to keep those).

JewelFan,
When usinmg DVD2One, set your size to 4360MB and leave your compression setting as is. There shouldn't be any warning about size for this DVD. IF there is, it's probably because it's the "Demo" version and as I remember, there's a 1/2 hour limit for what you can burn. When it's in full mode, I've put 4 DVD-9 movies (radically trimmed) on a single disc and 5 DVD-5 movies (radically trimmed) on a single disc. Not all that bad quality either :)
If you're using the Demo version then forget it and use DVD Shrink - and Decrypter using the directions below and the guide about 1/2 way down this page -
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/2/74599
For the best quality, using DVD Shrink open it and click "Edit", then click "Preferences" on this page we're going to select "DVD Target Size" as "Custom" and set the size to "4360MB" - we do this to make sure that we don't write too close to the edge of the disc. Then under the "File I/O" tab un-tick "Enable burning with Nero" then click "OK"
To trim some unnecessary items from your movie, you can "un-tick" some extra audio you don't want like the foreign audio streams, i.e. Klingon, Solarian Cluster Mush OR Eastern Himalayan Yak language selections or the Director's comments (also known as Outer Mongolian). This will result in your DVD requiring less compression and therefore providing you with a better quality picture.
It's now time to select Backup". Take just a second and under "Target Device" go to "Select backup target " once there, select "ISO Image File and burn with DVD Decrypter".
It's QUALITY you're after so we're going to spend some extra time to do it right. "Tick" Perform deep analysis before backup to improve quality" AND "tick" "Compress video with high quality adaptive error compensation." There you may adjust quality enhancements. Practicing with the settings can produce even better end products. For this DVD I suggest "Maximum Smoothness".
] If all the boxes are "grayed out" that's OK, it means your DVD is small enough that little will be lost from the original. Good, now click "OK." Finally, where it says "Select target image file", browse till you find your created folder for your backup, this is where you'll be burning your files to your HD. All click "Save". That's it ! Click "OK" and DVD Shrink burns that ISO image to your HD. It then opens DVD Decrypter and has it burn the ISO image to your waiting blank DVD. DVD Work\Sleeping Beauty Kills Bill, needs Anger Management and
Let's not use your PC for anything at all while it?s working, we don't want to mess things up this late in the game.
When your PC burns DVD's, it requires 100% of your processor to do the job correctly. For now, let's allow your PC to work in peace.
Ms. Computer will let you know when she's finished -
We're finished here, my work is done, enjoy your DVD backup.
Cheers,
Pete
