NEC 2510 Burning issue

HELP. I have an nec 2510, firmware 2.16, with the latest Nero, and get about a 15% success rate with Ritek -R's (G04's). Some specs:
AMD 2400, 512 DDR, XP Pro SP1.
Burner is on its own IDE channel (master).
no spyware present.
I am baffled, any help is appreciated. The damn thing lock up at 1%, and locks the entire system, even if the burn is canceled. Seems to happen about 30 seconds into things. +R media has not presented a problem, but I am having player compatibility issues with +Rs.
Any thoughts?
