Hi,

i have been burning a few dvd movies, mostly from avi format, then converting and burning to dvd using nero.

Sometimes when i'm burning a dvd it, well doesn't burn, and i've, through trial and error, figured out this problem is because i'm burning to a dvd-r, as when i use a dvd+r it works! (and vise versa!)

I am sick of wasting disks, so I was wondering if there is a way of knowing if you should be burning to a dvd-r or a dvd+r, when you don't have the original dvd disk?

I don't have any other problems with it other than this.

I also have the latest firmware for it installed.

Most of the time i try to burn to dvd-r, and on the odd ocasion it doesn't work, and by doesn't work i mean it writes the lead-in, then just hangs. After a while (between 10 mins to a couple of hours), I cancel the job as its doing nothing, then re burn it with a dvd+r and it works fine

I thought that it maybe the actual video that i'm putting to dvd that might be the problem, but do you think it could be hardware related??

What's the manufacturer ID on the different brands of media you've been using? Use this tool to find out:

Alright, your AN31 is about the crappiest media available so it's no wonder you're having problems with some -R burns. The TDKG02 and RICOHJPN are both good stuff.

Now the million dollar question is: Do you get failed burns when using the TDKG02 media?

I now see the error of my ways, as no i have never had problems with the TDKG02 media!

How do you tell whether the media is of good quality or not from the manufacturer id?

Here is a media guide you can use. It may be a little outdated but still pretty accurate.
