DVD-R is more compatible with more stand alone players.
I use both, but I rather burn DVD-R. At this time, almost all new players on the market are compatible with both formats. The trick is to use very good media to burn. You will be OK with either. I suggest Ritek, Verbatim or TDK media in whatever format you choose.
