calling brian100 or anyone else willing to help...
hello i noticed that you were talking to another member about the best dvd backup softwares, i just recently purchased a dvd burner for my dell laptop and i am wondering what the best software for my needs would be, all i would like to be able to do is make copies of dvd's such as "Van Helsing", "Top Gun", etc. i am without a doubt a very computer inefficient person, any help in terms i might recognize would be more than appreciated thank you for your time and anyone elses time who is reading this!

Until dual layer media gets down to a reasonable price I intend to stick with XCopy Express as it is one of the fastest transcoders around with very good end results.

swm04 - I would recomend DVDShrink as it is free and it gives you great control over the copying process. There are several very good guides on how to use it. On top of this page click on Guides and scroll down to DVD R and look for a Shrink guide.

I have used several different programs, Shrink, Recode 2 Dvd X copy.

I have found DVD X copy perfect for the job i want it to do. I want to copy the MOVIE and MAIN MENU only.

I use the latest version of x copy and it works a treat for this job and all in just 3 clicks, by just selecting the main movie in advanced option it keeps the main menu intact. No silly 321 backup screen at the start of backup dvd or pop ups like @is this a rented dvd.

I agree for a full movie or movie only shrink or recode 2 now due to the deep analyis option would provide better results especially on larger movies, however these programs are unable to provide a movie and meny only option unless u replace the extras with blank screens and mess about for ages!!!

MOVIE + MENU - has to be DVD X COPY PLATINUM 4.0.4.15

Full movie backups or movie only(without menu) id have to say i agree with what seems to be the majority, shrink or recode 2 are better options as they provide better quality.

I use DVD Shrink and then burn to DVD using Nero, but about 50% of the time I get failure at exactly 2.9% progress. And when it doesn't fail, it holds up at 2.9 for a long time. Anyone have any ideas why? this is frustrating and I have wasted so many DVDs. There is no way to reuse a DVD once it has 2.9% of a movie burnt, is there> DVD-R

Thanks,

My guess would be you got a bad rip to your HD. Try re-ripping the movie using Decrypter in file mode. Then run the files threw Shrink to make it fit on one DVD. Heres a guide that might help with this movie. It has helped others with problem movies http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/index.html

If you ask me Copy To DVD is the leanest meanest burning app to be had. Nero's been gathering virtual dust since I started using it.

Hey.

As a real newb to DVD burning i listened to alot of people saying use dvdxcopy. I have plat ver. 4.0.3.8 and have made a SH** pile of coasters. I did manage to backup a good 20 or so without a problem. CSS encoding was the major problem, I thought DVDXcopy would take care of that. Now I have started using
DVD Shrink 3.2 and Nero to make my backups. (AnyDVD 3.6.2.4 running) So far so good

I must be very lucky. I've done over 400 dvds with platinum. I got mine through 321 (now completely defunct) The link on the x-copy part of this forum took me to the site to get more activations. A very nice young lady called Alice answered in a couple of hours.
I asked her out for a drink, what with me being the most handsome dvd burner the world has ever known, it is only a matter of time before she succumbs to my charm wit, personality & sheer devastating good looks.

Then I woke up in my cornflakes.

Many here knock the product. Personally I love it. I would be hard pressed to recommend it though. It is a VERY fussy piece of software, with all of the permutations of soft/hardware, it was really up against it. Especially as to the price & with shrink & Nero doing a very good job (not forgetting decrypter)
It's a shame, but what can you do? I was impressed by the support I received, I did pay a lot at the end of the day for it though .. It's just a shame it is so damn expensive. I very rarely use shrink, but I have it installed just in case.

Sorry I have to change my vote here :-) Been doing some testing and comparing lately (after a little advice from a Bear) and I have to say DVDCopy3 along with AnyDVD are one of the best combinations I have eve seen. Quality wise I don't believe you can beat DVDC3. If you don't mind spending a little money for a very good proggy then DVD Copy 3 if the way to go!! They sold me on it :-)

I too am looking for a new option. I have had DVDxcopy platinum and I recently bought AnyDVD and clonedvd2.

I had 100s of successful backups with xcopy, although they sometimes have a few errors, little pauses only a few nonplayable discs.

I like the options with CloneDVD and the compression meter

I do believe there is some lose in quality with large films So I'm look for better options

DVDrebuilder/CCE basic & DVDshrink look like they will be a little complicated but may very well be the current best picture quality, which is what I'm looking for

I downloaded the trial version of one clickdvd because somewhere linked to this site it is rated #1. (take that with a grain of salt) but is has fewer options. Mainly I want to drop the AC3-6 and ad dts-6 but can only ad it but it does support dual layer disc.

so I'm going to backup The Lord of the Ring using all 3 programs just to see the difference
