99% of the time this is caused by crappy media. What are you using?

I managed to burn a number of DVD's using DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink. All of a sudden, when burning the .ISO file with DVD Decrypter and reaching around 97% of the complete file, I receive a DVD Decrypter I/O error. I tried capturing the error msg to a file. This is how it looks - please help anybody...

I remembered that my cat knocked off my stack of dvd's, so I tried one from the bottom of the stack, and it finally copied it fine. So rulle, so far when I get error codes like that, which has been 4 so far, it seems to be a bad disk. Make sure your using a high quality dvd, and if you are, check for scratches and such, or they might be a bad batch or just have a few bad disks.

What make/model burner are you using? Are you running the latest firmware for it? Out of date firmwares have been known to cause Power Calibration Errors.

@ru7lle

Is the original clean and scratch free?

At this point I'd say your drive may be defective/dying or it isn't getting adequate or consistent power due to an overloaded or failing PSU.

A dirty laser lens can also be the culprit so it couldn't hurt to give the inside of the drive a small shot of compressed air.

It's hard to say with certainty but they're both possibilities to check out and hopefully cross off the list.

thanks for the help, as of right now it seems like it was just the disks, but I'll keep the rest in mind for when it happens again!

Guys, regarding my earlier problem posted in this forum, it seem it was all due to using crappy media. I purchased a few Philips DVD+RW discs and burned the ISO file - which had caused me so much grief - with no problems at all. Just to be sure, I tried burning the ISO file again on the crappy media - and guess what- the burn process failed again.
Lesson nbr 1 - you get what you pay for
Lesson nbr 2 - never, ever by really cheap media

Thanks for all your help guys!!!

ok, kinda back at square one. I bought new verbatim movie maker -R's, (never had a problem with them before), and I burned 3 movies, then on the fourth, it gave me the I/O error message, this one the power calibration area error. I ran a dvd lens cleaner in my drive, and then tried again with a different verbatim disk, same message. I don't have any other programs going, and my digital research dvd drive in less than a year old.

@smyle1977

At this point if I was in your shoes and the drive is less than a year old I'd be sending it back for a replacement. With a new drive, updated firmware and good media there's no excuse for these PCE's.

I'm a big snot when it comes to burners and only buy Plextors because they're the quietest, best built and best performing drives I've used. They cost more than the others but they're worth it.

That being said if I couldn't have a Plextor I'd get a Pioneer and not lose a bit of sleep over it. They're also very well built and great performing drives.

your reply came at a great time, I'm just about to remove my drive and return it to best buy. Was thinking about a sony, but I'll check for the others first. New drive with the verbatims, hopefully I'll be back up and running soon. If you ever need an answer about electrical house wiring, then I can return the favor!

Small world, I'm commercial/industrial also out of Chicago. I got home with a new plextor, and the same disks that came up with the power calibration area error are now burning fine. Seems like the problem has been fixed, thanks for the time and help,
