is there any way of only keeping the main movie and deleting all the other parts of the DVD e.g. extras, menus etc?

Yes - use DVD Shrink in Re-author mode - guides available on this site.

I use DVD Shrink to re-author all my movies and cut out everything except the movie only. With the start end feature you can cut the crap off the start and the credits off the end. Plus its free, however, if you like it remember to donate to Mr Shrink!!!
