I have been struggling, it seems after installing Service Pack 2 XP, with dvd burning with Nero 6.
I kept getting calibration error and until now I've been stumped. For me I have been stumped and this is what worked for me:

Control Panel--Administrative tools---Services. Go to IMAPI CD Burning Com Service. Click on that and go to Start up Type and choose "disable" from the drop down menu. Don't forget to apply.

I am once again burning DVD's with NO MORE errors!!

@dj2000vd

IMAPI can be disabled by following these steps:

Start >
Control Panel >
Administrative Tools >
Services >

Now scroll down to IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service and double click it.

In the Properties window under the General tab look for the Startup Type drop down menu and select Disabled. Click OK and you're good to go.

Sorry I didn't get back to you as quick as I would've liked too, but Nephilim is on the money. I don't think I could actually describe in detail what specifically is being done by disabling the service, so I think Nephilim helped me out there.

I just know that abouyt a year ago I had gotten that same message ( calibration error) and this forum helped me solve the problem by realizing my EDE cable was the standard ( old?) type whereas the newer one had 40 connectors, but had an extra wire(?) for each one to help eliminate problems somehow especially when working with DVD's. Dvd's and Cd's are 2 different animals ( as I found out). I chsnged the cable and all was well--- Until I used Nero 6 after installing the service pack 2 in XP. Then the same error came up again. I'm not even sure how I got to the IMAPI CD Burning Com service ( seen it somewhere on the net), and disabled it and have been error-free since then.

I hope that does the trick for you.

IMAPI is a piece of crap written by Roxio that works similar to packet writing apps by keeping constant access to the drive. This constant access prevents other burning apps that need exclusive access to the drive from doing their thing. Disabling it eliminates that :)
