okay i hearve everyone here say they taped down 2 switches on the slim ps2 - what about the third one ?
third one u ask ? LOL the slim tool kits they sell come with 3 parts 1 for the switch at the front right side on the tray - 1 for the internal switch inside the unit by the lan port (by the way this part is really shitty and they want u to install it thru the hinge on the tray side -it never worked ) and part # 3 ..get ready for this ... the disc brake - yes -look above that little white pad and you will see that tiny little square hole just like the one at the front right side of the tray above the power switch - and note the piece of plastic attached to the lid that depresses the switch when the lid is closed --- for this you have to hold the disc brake to the right while inserting some object in there to jam it -- again the part that was sent was really poor and the disc brake would overpower it - so you want to make sure you use really sticky tape and clean the area around it first with alcohol to remove the oil from your fingerprints ...whitch leads us to yet another tip ..if you touch anything inside the unit especially metal ..wipe down your prints really good ...warrantee depots do look for this because machines are assembled by robots or humans wearing rubber gloves and if they find a print there they just might say ..sorry ..warranty void . now im going to tape down my other 2 sensors ..you see i just got this shitty slim tool today and decided that there must be a better cheaper alternative - and i never thought about taping down the other sensors and since some people were having problems even after - i'm positive that once the disc brake mis taken care of everything will work fine - it has to . peace out.

I have the new slim PS2 v12. I purchased the flip-top lid and the SwapMagic v3.3. It was very easy to remove the OEM lid and replace it with the new flip-top lid. I've had several problems with the new lid not making good contact on the pressure switches at the hinge and behind the reset switch. It appears the hinge of the new lid assembly is too thin and you have to bend it a little to make contact. After I got these kinks worked out I tried using the SMD DVD disk. It opens to a screen with two options: Load Program and Colors. I remove the SMD and replace it with a backup copies of my son's games and then hit the X button to load the game. It spins for a while and you can see the laser light hitting the disk. After about 60 seconds it comes up with a message at the bottom of the SwapMagic screen telling you to put in a valid PS2 disk. How do you get this stupid thing to work? Is it because of the DVD+R disk format? I've tried using several copy programs: Alcohol 120, Nero, Record Now, and a few others. Same thing every time. I force it to record on 1X every time.
Any ideas? Does anyone have the tape mods in with the V12 PS2 (US/NTSC), SMD v3.3, and DVD+R and get the backup games to play? I'm desperate here. My daughter has all ready trashed a new game by scratching it and I would prefer to make these backups work.
On a different note, this website is fantastic. Lot's of good information. I hope you can help me out as well. Thanks to everyone!

hawk113 - wether u have a usa model or not you can do the tape mod - if you have never opened a slim case before just go to any chip sellers site and look up the info for dismantiling it (easy) and remember to plan it so you can use the warranty sticker as a hinge and keep your warranty in tact . also i found scotch tape to hold the best- cut a square of it slightly bigger than the switch and stick a corner of it to a paper clip or something just to lower it over the switch - i have big hands but i can still get my pinky over the tape to press it on the switch ( not Too hard though just get it to stick ) then put it back together and stuff a small piece of tissue in the hole at the front left corner of the disc tray .. the messages that you were getting indicate either a bummed burn but most likely one or more switch is not fully depresed... if used alcohol to rip the game you dont have to select playstation as type of media - just make sure that file seperation is set to "never seperate" use image burning wizard when thats done simply use image making wizard and as far as speed goes i burn all mine at 4x on dvd -r verbatum brand discs with 100% success .hey ive even burned at 16 x on +r and they worked - but i wouldn't reccomend it because nobody else does i guess. also on the image making wizard you can check the box beside "fast skip read errors" if u haven't already and it will be a heck of alot quicker - just saying cuase my buddy said he was frustrated that it took too long to read a disc - like an hour . another program u can burn with is DVD Decrypter - which is free on the net - read in iso mode and write in iso mode - again just go into the options and change file splitting to none. and just to say this the swap discs will never -that i have seen say - insert your ps2 disc like the manual says - it just goes to a screen that says load program highlited in a green bar - i get alot of questions about that too. write back if u need more help

oh yeah and i was wrong about the disc brake thing - that only applied to the crappy slim tool becuase you have to leave the lid up when playing your discs which would normally apply the brake - there method involves permanently holding the brake back - again not what i like to see..

Thanks, wajax. I'll check my settings on Alcohol tonight when I get home and try a new burn as well. Oh, and one more thought. The paperwork that came with my PS2 slim says the manufacturer's warranty is only 90 days. Am I missing something with all of the concern about messing up the warranty sticker? I've had it for three months now so it's out of any warranty now if I read the manual correctly. Is there a different warranty period that I don't know about?

Oh, something else that just came to mind. For those of you worried about leaving fingerprints in the case, just in case Sony does check, you can buy clean latex gloves at Walmart or pretty much any hardware store for pretty cheap. I use them when I'm painting or working on my car to keep it simple to clean up.

hawk - sounds like you are doing something wrong, I have the same setup you do (minus the problems with the flip lid) and my SM 3.3 works like a charm. I use TDK DVD+R and no problems yet. I've used Nero and DVD Decrypter and both seem to work just fine. My 2 cents anyway...

Thanx, chromedome. I'll check my settings tonight on my DVD burner software and try again. I was able to get around the switch problems with the hinge by pulling the flip lid off and putting a little bit of superglue between the two fin-tabs that make up the hinge. Now the switch is pressed in even if the hinge is not exactly on top of the switch.

hey hawk113 - if your out of warranty then no worries - u hve a slim ps2 right ?you said yours was us version ,im in canada , and mine came with a 1 year waranty - i thought they gave all the new slims (v12) a one year . check your manual it shows the warranty on page 49 in mine all other ps2's were 90 days but there is speculation throught the community that the slims may suffer overheating or laser problems - i know the chip mods haven't come up with anything solid yet but they are installing the chips with extra resistors to lessen the chance of an immediate laser burnout . my bro had his modded with a chip , brand new slim - gave it to the installer in the box he did the laser fix and in 2 hours - zap -it was all over ( but The crying) LOL . i see this happening more often with the slims and it would appear that maybe sony made things a bit trickyer on the new line - just a guess . but yours should have a 1 year . and you might notice the slims do get hotter than the older models - i noticed it right away , but its a smaller package with a smaller fan and the fan isn't aimed out the back like it was before .

hey wajax, mine is one of the first slims actually sold in my part of California. I honestly got the first unit of the first shipment to a walmart in the bay area. I checked the warranty information in the back of the manual when I first started looking into mods right after I got the unit. It's 90 days in the manual. That's why I was wondering what the fuss was all about. If it was a year warranty I could understand. Maybe they had not changed the warranty status in the paperwork yet. I'll check with Sony and see if it's still covered. Thanks for that info. Also, thanks again for the dvd copying assistance.

yeah thats strange ,mine definitely says 1 year - for sure call sony and see what they have to say ,it doesn't make sense to have different warranty coverage amongst countries .unless we got bummer units - LOL

From conjecture, I'm guessing the older PStwos are only covered by a 90-day warranty, whereas the newer ones are 1-year. My 5A's manual (console bought in mid-January) says explicitly on page 49, "Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) warrants to the original purchaser that each of the constituent products of this "Playstation2" console shall be free from defects in material and workmanship for a period of one (1) year from the date of purchase (the "Warranty Period")." So far (knock on wood) the slim's been holding up just fine, even with backups, though I only "modded" it about four days ago.
I taped the upper sensor (behind the warranty sticker, below the lid hinge) with a few squares of Scotch tape, threw the console back together, and tissued the lower right sensor -- the fewer taped sensors, the better, in my opinion, since tape may or may not hold. Plus, the tissue is easily removable. All of my backups, with the exception of MGS3 (skips a bit during codec scenes) and The Lord of the Rings: The Third Age (skips heavily with long loading times before battle), have been running just fine with the Swap Magic 3.3. I don't need any loaders, and all games (CD or DVD) boot up within 5 seconds. I use Ridata R03 8x DVD+Rs and a NEC-1100A at 2.4x.

I just found out my PS2 (v12) does have a one year warranty. They are sending me a new warranty statement! Thanks for that information. It apparently had a one year warranty the entire time. They didn't know what to think about the manual.

It's Alive!!! Thanks wajax!! I found two problems...
The first, the flip lid wasn't making full contact. I just used a piece of tape to make sure the pin on the flip lid stays firmly seated. That kept the drive engaged.
The second, I used DVD Decrypter and burned a new copy the way you described. The copy I made with Alcohol still doesn't work, but the DVDD version works great.
Now I can make copies of my kids games and not have to worry about the originals getting destroyed.
Thanks everyone for the great information.

Just bought PS2, DVD burner and I need to learn how to backup my games so that they'll play. I know how to copy the games, but what should I use? If I use the tape method, what do I tape? And is installing a mod chip very difficult? I need help and input on exactly what I need to do. Does Swap Magic and tool actually work? I want to buy something so I can play backups, but don't want to mess up my PSTwo Slim. help!

Wo'h, *question overload* (beep beep kaboom!!)
anyway you need to do a lot of reading, probably dont chip a V12 (PSTwo slim) unless you can program a PIC or make a good laser fix yourself.

Alright I just read the whole thread (yeah im so cool) and everybody keeps asking the same questions... After the 3-4 page all you hear is the same sh--... I mean stuff... Over and over again. It's a shame I use my first post to flame people but oh well... Just read the whole thread before posting a question. I also noticed that is says newbie under all of their names... coincidence?
WHAT?? It says I'm a newbie!?
Ok having said that I'll answer some questions. If the disc opens, and then goes back to the browser, it is most likely the PS2. Try using an original game or something and tell me how that goes. My last v10 PS2 did the same thing but it wouldn't load any game on any media. I use Memorex DVD+R, so I know the media is good.It turns out my laser was completely burned out, after trying all the fixes (adjusting the laser angles, and adjusting the pots, etc.) I'd just go with returning it and getting a new PS2 if your warranty is still intact. If not, then search for "PS2 Disc Read Error Fix" on google.com and you WILL find some fixes. They might work. Might not. Wow what a answer to a simple question eh?
Now I got a question of my own... What's better to use for backing up my games: DVD-R or DVD+R?

Well generally v1-v6 dvd-r or v7-v12 both -r and +r.
I have read where some people have have found +r easier on their PSTwo's laser. DONT USE DVD-RW

Ok then I'll stick with the DVD+R media I'm usin' now. Heh I just realised this is a dead topic... Oh well.
Anyway supposedly I was getting a new PS2 today since I burned out my old one (couldn't be saved) but it seems to never work out that way. Parents been promisin' me one for months I might have one by next month if I'm lucky. I had some money in my pocket but my freakin mom went through my wallet when I was sleeping and took half my money and stuck it in her bank account. Then the rest of it went towards valentine's day :P

luijo123 heres some possible problems for you and i'll list them for different set-ups since you didn't say what version your ps2 was ....
1) if you are using swapmagic with a slide card i'd say it's time for a new ps2 or you could take in for a repair - but- that can be just as costly as a new unit.
2) if your are using swapmagic with either a slimtool ,magicswitch,or the tape mod chances are one of the tools has moved and caused the lid switch to pop up - if your using this method -post back and i'll give you an easy homemade solution to those tools (this method applies to slim ps2 units)
anyway post back with you ps2 version and what method/tools you are using - if your mot sure what version it is -look on the back of the unit for the schp number and post that as well..
