I have a fliptop problem. When i installed the ps2 fliptop, the disc does not seem to want to spin at all. I believe it is a sensor problem because when i pushed on it it started spinning. Does anyone know how to fix this? Thanks

About The PS2 Flip LID -- you're problem is not uncommon and is usually a result of the inner rear sensor not being fully depressed by the the tab on the flip lid . personally i have tried both the slim and the magic tool and found that they both were a pain to install the rear sensor tool and they quickly became useless becuase the glue let go on the tabs that hold the tool in place . i decided to cut a rectangle of very thin plastic and cut it to fit over the switch and touch both the rear inside wall of the case and the metal bracket of the laser mount and applied a smal amount of crazy glue to both spots ..as for the switch at the front right hand corner of the disc tray - i stuffed some tissue in there and it has worked perfect for almost 3 months now - and i can play the unit with the lid closed -unlike the magic tool method . another user posted his fix earlier in this thread for the flip lid - but likely it is the rear or both sensors not being fully seated .....and incase you read this somewhere - dont just put crazy glue on the sensor switches itself -the glue wil leak inside and bye bye ps2 . i'll post the users name who fixed the flip lid if you still want to go that route if i can find it again ..

I have the new slim PS2 v12. I purchased the flip-top lid and the SwapMagic v3.3. It was very easy to remove the OEM lid and replace it with the new flip-top lid. I've had several problems with the new lid not making good contact on the pressure switches at the hinge and behind the reset switch. It appears the hinge of the new lid assembly is too thin and you have to bend it a little to make contact. After I got these kinks worked out I tried using the SMD DVD disk. It opens to a screen with two options: Load Program and Colors. I remove the SMD and replace it with a backup copies of my son's games and then hit the X button to load the game. It spins for a while and you can see the laser light hitting the disk. After about 60 seconds it comes up with a message at the bottom of the SwapMagic screen telling you to put in a valid PS2 disk. How do you get this stupid thing to work? Is it because of the DVD+R disk format? I've tried using several copy programs: Alcohol 120, Nero, Record Now, and a few others. Same thing every time. I force it to record on 1X every time.

Any ideas? Does anyone have the tape mods in with the V12 PS2 (US/NTSC), SMD v3.3, and DVD+R and get the backup games to play? I'm desperate here. My daughter has all ready trashed a new game by scratching it and I would prefer to make these backups work.

On a different note, this website is fantastic. Lot's of good information. I hope you can help me out as well. Thanks to everyone!

It's Alive!!! Thanks wajax!! I found two problems...

The first, the flip lid wasn't making full contact. I just used a piece of tape to make sure the pin on the flip lid stays firmly seated. That kept the drive engaged.

The second, I used DVD Decrypter and burned a new copy the way you described. The copy I made with Alcohol still doesn't work, but the DVDD version works great.

Now I can make copies of my kids games and not have to worry about the originals getting destroyed.

Thanks everyone for the great information.

It was noted earlier that you can remove the warantee sticker pretty easily, but I'm still wary of removing it on my new PS2 (old one bit the dust due to the super glue incident I mentioned earlier). Has anyone thought of or attempted to open the PS2 with it on and intact? For example, remove the screws and crack the thing open from the front instead of from the left side (side with stand mount). I imagine putting additional tape on the back could help from tearing or breaking the warantee sticker.

I'm still debating if I should try doing this, I'm afraid I might snap something though like the led on the front from opening it this way.

i was able to open my pstwo without removing the warranty sticker (using it as a hinge) so that i could replace the top with a fliplid. I didnt have any trouble with this, i pulled it open from the front.

dont remove the sticker at all, when the sticker is removed and put back on 9/10 times it exposes the word void all across it when the sticker is stretched or the glue comes away from it - trust me ...or try for yourself.

The warranty sticker is fairly strong, it won't break that easily. However, what people fail to mention is that using the sticker as a hinge may not necessarily keep the warranty intact. I've done it, and it creates a very noticeable crease in the middle of the sticker and also exposes the word 'void' slightly along the affected area. Then again, I kept my PStwo open for quite long after I repeatedly failed to installed my flip lid.

Personally, I'd recommend getting a replacement plan from wherever you bought it ($15 from EB in my case), because I hear they aren't as sensitive to warranty sticker tampering as $ony is. And if you do open the PStwo, make it quick and close it up as quickly as possible to minimize sticker 'damage.'

That said, if my particular unit is any indication, the latest shipments (date code 5A) of PStwos don't seem to have any problems. I don't know if you can extrapolate from just one sample, though.

Whats up people. I'm excited, I got mine working, finally.

I bought the slimline PS2 with the GT4 bundle pack in Sydney NSW - Model SCPH-70002. I've read this thread with great interest and used the pool knowledge from this page to get mine working. I want to contribute back and let you know what I did, as a thank you because without the thread i wouldnt be looking at my "backup" of GTA San Anreas playing flawlessly right now.

I bought swap magic 3.3 from realgamer.com.au, it came with a three piece plastic kit to fool the PS2 sensors which DOES NOT work, all I managed to do was lose the tiny bit of plastic inside the PS2 guts somewhere and "Part C" does not fit in the hinge no matter what i tried, so I chucked that in the trash.

Next I tried the Straw method which DOES NOT work and is as messy as hell to boot, I dont know maybe I didnt do it right but i followed the instructions word for word.

I bit the bulllet and opened up the PS2 on page 1 of this thread, I had my laptop handy with all the pics, using the warranty sticker as a hinge as someone suggested (Excellent idea).

I blue tacked the hinge sensor permanently down (This is the bastard sensor that people use straws to push down). I tried sticky tape but the sensor kept popping back up.

For the lid sensor there is a spring that pushes a peice of plastic with rubber brakes to stop the disk from spinning, I removed the spring and taped it to the lid in case I need to return the ps2 for warranty.

I left the third sensor alone, the one on the corner.

I put the PS2 back together and for last last sensor (the one in the corner near the power button) I used piece "A" from the swap magic plastic kit. If you dont have this bit, just use some blue tack to hold the sensor down, its VERY easy.

And thats it, I am able to close the lid while playing. I had the lid opened and its VERY annoying to watch a naked spinning disk not to mention all the dust and crap that must get in there.

Thats it,

Once again thank you for this thread as it has helped me out alot

glad to hear it's working and not that it might matter - but you didn't have to remove that spring on the disc brake - the only reason the magic tool did that was because you had to leave the lid up ( which applies the brake) while playing a backup - it's obvious function is to stop the disc from spinning when you open the lid - so you may end up putting that spring back in or not - when i started i used the magic tool as well and tool c does fit in there -but i was trying to put it in between the 2 plastic pieces of the hinge and not between the right side of the hinge and the spring - due to the poor quality of the picture they provide - but even at that it was a pain to hit the sweet spot - and like you say , who wants to play a game with the lid up and attract dust in there - not to mention the annoying whirring of a disk doing mach 1 - LOL .. and for anyone who has tried to play a back up copy of mercenaries - you need to look on line for the patch or it won't play .

not sure about "Three piece magic switch" made in HK. Here is the "Two piece Magic Switch" made in US

the cool thing about 2 pieces, the switch, you can slide to the Left or to the Right which is cover over the sensor or uncover the sensor (there original stage, some games works if you have sensor uncover)

here is the pict.

You were right about the spring, I put it back on and it still works :)

That white cap above would have been handy, if only magic swapped supplied that as well with their kit

Okay, I bought a PStwo from Wal-mart, but had to return it cuz I think I ruined the system because it woudln't work when I forced the system open. Well, when I did that, a metal piece came loose inside and I didn't know where to put it, so once I closed the system, you could hear a jingling of that piece. My main question is, how in the heck do you open the system easily and not forcefully? I was about to do it again with a new PStwo system I bought off eBay, but it was still hard; I can't return it, so I gave up. I am currently waiting on the fliptop for my PS2 old model style system. Hopefully, I will figure out something for my PStwo, or I may have to sell it on eBay.

RainyWM, sorry to hear about your PS2 man.

That metal piece that fell off sounds terminal. Its not the IR remote sensor is it? Because when i opened up mine, the IR remote sensor popped out of its slot and I nearly had a heart attack. Luckily it was attached to a ribbon cable and you can slide it back in its place very easily, near the power LED

I opened up the PS2 by removing the screws, then using my nails to slightly open it up from the side where the holes to hold the vertical stand.

Next use your hands to separate the ps2 so the gap is big enough to fit a precision flat head screw driver in there (or any small flat head screw driver). there are clips on the bottom edge, use the flat head to carefully pry the clips so it snaps out, dont worry the plastic clips won't snap. Continue doing that around edges until all the clips are out then you can open it up fairly easily.

Gengiskp,

I am having prying open the PStwo, not PS2, without breaking and snapping something inside. I tried the pull outward motion then up motion to go around the IR sensor and power switch, but the system top doesn't want to move forward, only up. I can get it up and out, but not without snapping something inside by the sound of it.

i wonder if this forum would allow me to post a video clip of how to do this - in the meantime are you prying at the seam on the ledge that sticks out first ? use a small knife to just pop it free heres a link to case opening instructions http://www.modchip.ca/install/ps2/general/apartv1011.php
you took out all 6 screws right - nothing should break and you dont need to use alot of force to open this thing - when you stick the knife in to pry it apart - dont put it in too far and pry just enough to till it pops free and thats it -no more . now hold that seam apart while you turn the unit back over - and it should start coming apart on its own now - keep following the earlier instructions ( thumb over front face fingers over the rear like a claw to hold the rear down so you can lift the front up like its on a hinge .
and if any moderators see this and i can post a clip where can i upload and whats the max size .

RainyWM,
I was referring to the slimline ps2, i didnt know it was called a pstwo. You can't pull it forwards, only up and out like you say, like a clamshell with the warranty sticker as the hinge.

Use the link Wajax put up, there is a pic with a knife in the the gap, thats basically what i did except with a precision flat head screwdriver.

Uchiha, stay away from the warranty sticker, pry it from the other side

the best way to solve your ps2 problems when it breaks is to just go buy a new one take the bottom off and put it on a new one and put the new one on the broken one and return it whitin 24 hour, but make sure your open seal is intact

Hey guys.

I bought the PS2lid and swap magic 3.3 a few days ago. Installed it tonight but my DVD's won't spin. I was able to get it to work ONCE by putting pressure downwards on the flip top, but I can't get it to work anymore doing that.

I read through this whole thread but am still unsure on how to proceed trying to fix this specifically by using the Ps2lid. What should I be looking for? I know the disc brake is being pushed back correctly, but what other sensors am I looking for, and what part of the ps2 lid should be effecting those?

Thanks!!
