I have a new slim ps2 you might want to go with the flip top if your wanting to spend money,if you dont want to spend money tou can just get the swap magic discs and do the tape mod. The tape mod is fairly simple you just have to decide what you want to do.

Ok, after reading through the first 10 page or so, I have 3 question

1. Is the whole thing about PS2 locking up if both censors are covered true?

2. I have a 97003 Ps2, like the other poster said, do I have to worry about the laser burning out?

3. I got a 1 year replacement plan from EBgames, would they take it back for a new one if they see the warrenty seal is broken?

OK, I went ahead with the tape mod and have 2 question

1. Is it correct if I open the cover while a DVD is playing and the disc still spins?

3. If this is correct, how would you go about switching games? Turn off PS2, put back SMD, and put in games?

2. Why is the power button so damn hard to push? Could it be that i apply a too large piece of tape that it blocked the power button?

yay i did the tape mod and i works!! but i'm a bit scared as i read this thread thoroughly and people weren't able to play original games because the switches were pressed down. Does it only happen on the earlier versions or is it something else...

I have a 700011 dc5A, I hope it doesn't happen to me cause i've gone through 2 ps2s already :(

^my answers to tpham2006
1. I don't feel comfortable leaving the lid open because it makes some noises like something is scratching the disc.
2.i guess that's the right way to switching games, I havn't found another way.
3.the power button maybe hard to push because I think it might not be aligned correctly with the case or maybe there is too much tape. o.O

Thanks for replying.

I once again opened up my PS2, and the tape was kind of blocking the power's button way so I removed it, put in a smaler piece and everything is fine.

also

"1. I don't feel comfortable leaving the lid open because it makes some noises like something is scratching the disc.
"

But does the disc still work after it's open? I opened the tray with a DVD in there. Although the disc kept spinning, the DVD doesnt play correctly. It skips around until I close the trey. Is that normal or did I screw up somewhere.

hmm i havn't tried it with a dvd only a game but the screen was on a still picture and i tried opening the lid to see if it would play but it made wierd noises as i started to lift it so i just kept it down and it looked like it was spinning slower. i would just leave the lid down, although I think its that silver thing hitting the disk when it is open, I don't know what it's called but you should see it when the lid is open and you can tape it back so it won't hit the disc. I hope i'm clear :/

To answer some of the last questions.

1. Yes if you open the lid the disk will spin.

BUT.......

When you put in the swap magic disk and hit x, then it will boot the ps2. Once that is done the disk should stop spinning in the ps2 (you should hear it spin down). That is when you open the the lid and put in the backup game then close the lid and hit x again. The backup game should spin up and load the game.

If for some reason the swap magic disk does not stop spinning then you probably did not take the tabs down hard enough. You have to do a fairly good tape job, so and not let the springs of the tabs pop back up.

I would also like to state that I have done every mod to my slim ps2 listed here.

The mod that was easiest, worked every time, and had no real chance at harming my ps2 when done correctly was the TAPE mod. I encountered no problems when doing this mod compared to others such as the straw method.

So overall I say the TAPE MOD is the best solution.

Also for people who are having trouble getting games to work with swap magic, make sure its a game that will work with the SM disks. About 5% of ps2 games will need another boot disk in order for it to work with swap magic. Some games won't work at all. But 95% will.

There is a compatibility list somewhere...

Here it is http://www.swapmagicfix.com/

Ho hum. Time to answer a few questions...

1) Taping the sensors down doesn't harm the PStwo in any way. In fact, every single swap modification works on the very same principle of depressing the two sensors (slim tools/magic switches/ghost switches/fliptop lids).

2) I have a strong feeling that all the 2005 PStwo models are fine, laser-wise. The previous models (date code 4B, the first shipment, followed by the 4C) all were reported to have laser problems, but I haven't really heard any issues with the 5A, a new model which came out sometime in early to mid-January. My PStwo, in fact, is a 5A, and it hasn't experienced any problems... yet. To check the date code of your model, flip your PStwo over and check the bottom label with the serial. The date code should be in a white box. By the way, the 97003 number is irrelevant: All North American PStwos should be SCPH-70012 CB/97003, regardless of model. The date code is more important.

3) I won't say the tape mod is the best solution (because I strongly believe it breaks Sony's one-year warranty by virtue of sticker tampering, regardless of whether you use it as a hinge), even though that is what I use myself. If you want to preserve your warranty with certainty, get a slim tool or a magic switch, since neither require the opening of the console. That said, both of them have their problems with fitting in the plug to depress the back sensor (many people have reported difficulties in doing so), and the magic switch has the added insult of requiring your PStwo lid to be open all the time. If the warranty is not an issue for you, then by all means use the tape mod; after all, it's free! Just be careful when opening up your console, since applying too much force could damage the power switch. Also, don't tape the front sensor -- just push a small ball of tissue or paper into the front sensor hole with the case closed.

Other miscellaney:
Swapmagicfix.com is almost useless for Swap Magic 3.3 users and beyond, since it focuses entirely on the outdated Swap Magic 2.0 set. By extension, it is also useless to most PStwo owners, since the majority of them probably have the 3.3 set or beyond. I have tried to address this issue with a compatibility list of sorts for the SM 3.3 set in the PS2 - Software boot discussion forum.

As for EB's one-year replacement plan, I have one as well, since I wanted to be on the safe side because I knew I would be opening my PStwo up. Since my PStwo hasn't broken down (yet), I don't really know just how eagle-eyed or conscientious EB employees are about sticker tampering... but I've heard one report that they don't pay much attention to the sticker. However, I'm sure this could very likely vary from store to store.

you can remove and replace warranty sticker by heating it up with a hair dryer and put it somewhere so it won't get any dirt etc, until you've modded ps2.Then just replace as it will still be sticky.VOILA.jobs a gudun

well after reading through about 75% of this thread. i STILL have some questions. i have a uk bought ps2 slim (v12). i checked for a date code on the bottom of it and there is none, only a serial number.

so far the ps2 has no problems reading dvd-r. i played a NTSC movie which i burnt at 4x on ritek g04 media and it played without any problems.

anyway i was thinking of getting it chipped but after the stories ive heard n read about with v12 lasers burning out i wont bother. im thinking of getting swap magic discs and using the tape mod to play my backups but was wondering will this do any harm to the laser?

also i read about the so called 'sony booby trap' and was wondering if the uk 70003 ps2 has this trap and will it mess up my ps2 after a few days/weeks

has anyone with this particular version of ps2 (slim uk version 70003, no date code but bought very recently [week or two] maybe new batch from sony) had any problems with the laser or the booby trap using smd 3.3. and how long has urs been working.

also i did say im not really interested in the dms4 modchip, but has anyone had good success with it. will it destroy my laser? how long will it last?

any help is much appreciated.

take off the top of the internal switch with a small screw driver.remove the little peace metal(the switch that makes the contact to spin the damn dvd)in the switch.get a solder and just put a little drop of solder in the switch(which is not hard, any moron like me could do it)that it connects,so that the cd is able to spin.then tape only the front damn switch.I did this damn fix when I got mine and never add a damn problem.jesus I hope I helped you guys and dont be afraid to this if you want to take off your damn tape and do this fix.so that if you dont want to open your damn ps2 again because of the tape coming off all the damn time.hope you guy understand this.pm me if you have any questions about this thing.thanks you and good luck!!! this is for the lim pstwo.
