hello, i just signed up here because i recently got a burner for my computer and had a couple questions.

The Dvd Faq page had this to say about burning dual-layer disk on a single-layer burner:
Quote:
Dual-layer recording is much trickier than single-layer recording. However, dual-layer recording techniques developed for Blu-ray (see 3.13) have been adapted for recordable DVD. Write-once (+R and -R) recordable DVD-9 discs, which hold almost double the amount of data or recording time (see 3.3), should show up around the end of 2004. Dual-layer rewritable discs are harder to get working, but they may show up a year or two later. Recordable drives will cost about the same as regular drives (since only firmware changes are required to record two layers) and the discs will cost between 1.2 to 3 times as much as single-layer discs.
so does this mean that if the manufacturer (or somebody online) releases a different version of firmware for my drive, i can burn dual layer disks? and if so, where would i find such firmware other than the manufacturer's website?

Thanks,

Matt

Hi there Matt,

Unfortunately you're asking about something that doesn't exist. The best guess is that a "Hacked" firmware for something like Pioneer or Plextor will show up first. NO manufacture will ever supply firmware for your burner as they'll want you to buy a drive rather than "give" you one for free -

Dust off your wallet, dual burners are less than $100.00(USD) be better to just buy one -

Cheers,

Pete
