mpeg i think how to tell??

Ok I downloaded some files of internet, I believe thay are Mpeg because I can play them with media player, is there a way to tell for sure?? Also is there a guide to tell me how to convert to proper format so I can burn it to a DVD-r that'll play in DVD players!!

GSpot is just what you're looking for :)

It'll tell you exactly what format ther file is, what codecs are needed to work with it and whether they're installed.

For the conversion you can first use TMPGEnc. Here's a guide that'll give you rough idea of how it works:

Then you can use TMPGEnc DVD Author to put them in the proper DVD format and add a menu if you like. Here's a guide for that:
