how can i get virtualdub to convert avi's to mpeg1? or mpeg 2 for that matter. there are alot of codecs listed, but mpeg1 isn't there....i know it's installed on the system.....studio 7 can export to mpeg1 files....why can't virtual dub?

I would suggest using TMPGEnc for that. VirtualDub is not for making .avi into .mpg

You can download TMPGEnc from this website and it is free. If the codec for you .avi is installed (divx, etc) on your system TMPGEnc will convert it into a nice .mpg for you.

Please describe what you mean by edit, as TMPGEnc has Merge and Cut functions in its MPEG tools, which will allow rough editing of your files (eg cutting into two for 2xVCDs, or merging files together for a longer film). If it is adding subs you want to do, then you can use VirtualDub as a frameserver to TMPGEnc, which will then make you your .mpg with the titles burned on. Let us know what you are wanting to do.

i want to use VirtualDub as a frameserver for Tmpgenc. i've followed all of the tutorials i can find for it, but tmpgend always bombs out saying it can't read the format. can someone step me through it? i've been going by the "how-to" in virtualdub's help file. i just assumed it simply "didn't work with tmpgenc
