lol ... i told you they were good ... it's just a process of elimination ... so be patient and hold that baby in! :) We'll get to the bottom of it eventually.

...Just another stupid question with a simple answer...that's me!

I've downloaded the new drivers, and I really thought for sure that it was going to do the trick. The computer seemed to breeze through the analying no problem but then locked up at 62% Encoding. *grrr*
But definetly seems to be an improvement to me! I'm going to try it again, just to see if it locks up again, or will perhaps go through but..well, that's my new status.

With the second attempt Encoding went all the way through. When I went to write it on the blank DVD I got this message:
DeviceIoControl (FSCTL_LOCK_VOLUME) Failed!
Device: [1:0:0] LITE-ON DVDRW SOHW-1213S TS09 (D:) (ATA)
Unable to lock volume for exclusive access
Reason: unknown (34)

This is most commonly caused by packet writing apps such as InCD, DLA or Drag to Disc. Part of the way they work is to keep constant access to the drive so when another burning app needs to gain exclusive access to the drive it can't and the write process will be aborted. If you have any packet writing apps, uninstall them and see if that clears up your problem.

If that doesn't work it could also be Windows built in IMAPI burning service which also likes to keep access to the drive. It's a useless app to begin with and even more so when you have dedicated burning software installed.

IMAPI can be disabled by following these steps:

Start >
Control Panel >
Administrative Tools >
Services >

Now scroll down to IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service and double click it.

In the Properties window under the General tab look for the Startup Type drop down menu and select Disabled. Click OK and you're good to go.

If, and only if, the steps above don't work you can set Decrypter (I'm assuming you're using Decrypter to burn) to where it doesn't need to lock the drive by doing the following:

Tools > Settings > ISO Write Mode > then uncheck "Lock Volume - Exclusive Access".

By using this method you're possibly leaving yourself open to failed burns if another app interrupts the burn process.

We're now on a mission to get you burning trouble free before the baby arrives - no child should ever be born into a household filled with burning woes!!!!! :P

Well I thought I was going to have great news, it's getting close! With the instructions to disable IMAPI it helped a lot, but I guess only temporarily. My first burn (thereafter), it froze once at encoding. On the second attempt it went through from beginning to end perfectly. I did another one straight away which went off perfectly as well. Then to be sure, I restarted the machine, attempted another movie which froze at encoding, yet on the second attempt went straight through. At this point I'm feeling pretty good. I double checked to make sure that the IMAPI was still disabled (which it is), 'cause now it's locking up again pretty much every time, though it tends to be more at the encoding stage rather than analyzing. I went to follow the second half of your instructions which was only IF the first ones weren't working well enough, and when I went to ISO mode, it didn't give me the "write" option (which I remember being there before) It only gave me the option to "Change Volume Label" which then wanted me to select a file, so I didn't think that was the right thing. Shouldn't it say "Write mode" and "Read mode" or something like that?
So anyhow, to make a short story long...it feels like we're right ... just about...oh so close ...
I'm holdin' this baby in come hell or high water *laugh* actually I've still got a month so hey, 'tis all good.

I tried doing a deep analysis to see if maybe that would help, but the analyzing seems to be going through fine. Though now when I try to go to "backup" I get the error message:
DVD Shrink encountered an error & can't continue
Programming error - exception occurred
The parameter is incorrect.

Tsk, tsk. You didn't follow the directions :P

When you click on "Tools" go all the way down to "Settings" then you'll find the options you need :)

It might also pay dividends to reinstall both Shrink and Decrypter.

I don't know how you guys don't go mad from all this stuff. I'm just not understanding why the results are so sparratic. For instance, I just copied 2 DVD's no problem, right through, yet now on my third I've frozen 3 times during the analyzing stage. Before the third attempt I tried "unlocking the tray" and it still froze. I've also uninstalled and have re-installed both Shrink and Decrypter. So now I'm just going to try a different movie and see if that changes anything.

Just copied 2 movies. One froze up several times (see above post), yet magically the second one went through perfectly. I've noticed that once Shrink goes through the analysis process that stays with the computer even after shut off, disc removed etc. IE) Trying to copy Bruce Almighty has been giving me lots of problems, but the analysis went through (finally) and then problems with encoding (see post from Nov. 4 @ 21:16)I've copied several movies since with more success..so decided to try 'almighty' again. As soon as I tried to run shrink, it came up as though the analysis process was already done, and went to go straight to encoding, which brought up the original error from Nov. 4 post. Any way to get around that?

The discs that you're having trouble with, are they clean and scratch free?

Yes the discs seem to be fine, it's very strange. I might freeze up once, or maybe four times from a disc. Yet, 2 days later I try it and it'll go through. The only one I can't get to work at all is Bruce Almighty but at this point, who the hell cares!!?? I'm having stuff go through and for that I'm extremely grateful!!
I sure hope that if you guys work with computers for a living, that you're getting paid well. If not, tell your boss that I said (and this holds a lot of clout), that you deserve a raise. :) Seriously though, my sincere thanks for everything. I'll name this baby Nephilim Pete Foster in honour of the people who helped her mother make it until her birth with sanity intact.
