But i dont think i want to cut a hole, lol. I'll just spend the 40 bucks. I was thinking of gettin a mod chip, but i dont know how to intstall it. If anybidy knew like a website that shows you how to do it, that would be cool.

It sounds like you probably want the No Solder Mod Chip. This doesnt require a lot of know-how to install and works with this method. You can find instructions for it here: http://www.modchip.ca/install/ps2/nosolder/nosolder.htm But they are also given with the chip. You can get both the chip and the swap disks together for about $30, which is a very cheap and easy solution. I think the cheapest place for this is http://www.modchipnow.com/. They give you a $10 GC when you register. $30 including S&H!!

PS - make sure that you have V 4, 5, 6, 7 PS2. The No Solder Mod Chip only works with those versions. Otherwise you may have to use a solder chip or the slide card method. You can also get a PS2 Flip Top Shell that may be a better solution to the slide card, which has been known to eventually cause problems with the DVD drive.

I followed the guide and set it up as you said but when i go to image making I cant choose the disc type or any other options and it doesn't read that there is a ps2 game in the drive, i think it thinks its dvd film or something because underneath mode it says dvd. Also when i try and burn a ps2 game from an image it doesn't let me choose any options there either. I am running the 1.9.2 build 1705 version of Alcohol 120%.Plz Help

Thats because alcohol automatically detects that it is a ps2 game and sets it to that setting.

I'm starting to think it is my dvd burner.
I have a liteon burner
or is gta san andreas using a different type of
protection for copy write protection than the older
games.

I followed the guide and set it up as you said but when i go to gerenal tab I choose the disc type playstation 2 and it doesn't read that there is a ps2 game in the drive, i think it thinks its audio cd because underneath mode it always has audio cd. even if I update the tab to playstation 2 and click ok the option will not stick ...it goes back to audio cd
p.s. this was an non-issue because I burn -ed all my other games on the data type : audio cd tab and all are good and working games.

i used memorex dvd-r too for sa and wasted about 3 dvds. Then i bought maxell dvd-r's and burned it with decrypter at 2x. Now everything works. So it might be the media. I never had problems with memorex except with tiger woods 2005 and gta sa.

Techville try some DVD+R. I have an older PS2 and from what everyone told me on the these forums I must've used about 10 DVD-R and 3 different brands before I switched over to DVD+R. I've used 3 different brand DVD+R now and they all work.

thanks guys Diesel04 & Winning11
for your reply
it worked
it worked
I bought some maxwell dvd+r and I was
able to burn gta san andreas and the new mortal
kombat.
So gang I think this is the deal,
the new gta san andreaS & mortal kombat GAMES
aRE built on the dvd+r platform
because I was able to burn the game using
dvd+r MAXWELL. I WAS ABle to use verbatim
dvd + r AND MEMOREX DVD+R for gta but the games would load and error out
message would appear on the screen STATED DISC ERROR... So guys be sure to advise your peers that media is an important
part of a successful game backup.
p.s. I have over 40 successful back ups with dvd -r
MEMOREX with older games ........
IMPORTANT: NOT ALL GAMES CAN BE BACKED UP WITH DVD + R
ESPECIALLY OLDER GAMES . REMEMBER THAT DVD-R WAS THE FIRST PLATFORM OUT. SO PICK YOUR MEDIA CAREFULLY ..............FOR EVERY GAME A
DIFFERENT RULE MAY APPLY THANKS ALOT GUYS
MAXWELL DVD+R GOOD BURN FOR GTA SAN ANDREAS AND THE NEW MORTAL KOMBAT

hello
ive read all throught these post and nobody mentions what speed the games should be burned.
i was under the impression it had to be 1x
cuz the playstation could only read the dvd disks at 1x
i think its this way to make piracy even harder

sick_unit the data type is a non-issue because
all my 41 succesful burns have been on the option
of audio cd. My alcohol program is the same way
if I scroll to the playstation 2 option at the data type tab and
choose ps2 and then go to the scroll bar and click ok, the update will not stay
it goes back to audio cd... not a issue alochol 120
is able to tell it is a ps2 cd and will burn the
according.
ps. all stoan other options will stay if the click
ok
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
update with gta san andreas
that burn was good. dvd+r maxwell at 4x speed in
alcohol 120%
but the games loads slower that the original
game and every now and then I get a disc error message on the screen. when the error screen appears I can actually listen and hear the ps2 trying to read the backup disc. It normally takes about a minute or two and the ps2 reads the disc and the error message going away and the games starts to play again as normal. It does this about 1 time every hour.
it's not that bad
burn speed have never really been an issue for me
but I'm sure you are probably right( the slower the burn the better quailty disc you will have.)
maybe if I burn the disc gta san andreas at 1x my backup would be better.

I was having the same issue, i was using 1-4x discs, and it would only burn at4x, i used record now! and changed it to 2.4x and then 2.4x speed was then working for all other programs, i suggest that you try changing the speed in the program that came with your dvd burner, that might work.
Also i have an old version of ps2 with a new mod (i think my ps2 is about 2-3 years old), and wont work with dvd-r, should i try dvd+r??? does it make anydifference, ive read here and other places that dvd+r will only work on an old ps2, and dvd-r are will never work, is this true?

no i think
dvd-r was the first out - so maybe compatible with older playstations then dvd=r is the new one i think.
but i think it depends on your playstation which type it will play. i heard that dvd-r work with most PS2's
