Is a modchip totally essential to playing a backup game. I want my friend to copy something for me because he has a dvd burner but do i have to have a modchip to play it. Is there anyway to make it so that u don't need a mod? If yes, you have to please tell me the best place

Yeah man you do need a modchip do play burned games. The best thing that i recommend for u is to get swap magic since you dont have to open up your ps2 or anything.
