AVI to MPG burning problem and others

Hi,
I have a film on my HD that is 700mb AVI, (it is 1 3/4 hours long) I have to burn it to a CD to play on a DVD player but it goes way over the size. So I tried to MPEG the file and this has turned into a 3.3 GB file. That has confused me big time as I thought MPEG'd files were supposed to be smaller.
Anyway, now I have 2 files on the same film. One AVI 700mb and 1 mpeg at 3.3 GB. How can I burn the film onto 2or 3 CD's or 1 DVD. I have tried Nero but it cann't see the large file I have also tried Ace DVD Backup but this also doesn't see either of the files.
Please help as I am now stuck!
