Hello, I'm new to the group and was wondering if someone had any experience with this problem.

I'm running a stock Toshiba P25-S520 laptop. The DVD/CD drive has been working great for about 5 months, until about 1 month ago, I noticed that it would no longer burn CD's at its 16X rate. It would start off fine and then just stop. I dropped the speed to 12X and didn't have an problems. Just recently I tried to burn another CD at 12X speed and it failed. Now, the drive doesn't recognize any type of disc (CD, DVD, blank disk). I've uninstalled and reinstalled the drive. I've flashed a firmware upgrade. I still get the same results: my computer recognizes the drive but when you insert any discs, it acts as if the drive is empty.

When the drive worked, whenever you inserted a disc, it would rev up for about 2 seconds. I'm assuming it was identifying the disc, and then the standard Windows XP menu would pop up and ask you what to do with the disk. Now, whenever you insert the disk, the drive revs up for half a sec and seems to stop abruptly.

I'd appreciate any ideas people may have.

BTW, I'm running Windows XP home edition SP2. I am burning with RealPlayerv10. If I could get feedback in 6 or so days, that would be great because someone is trying to unload the drive I need on ebay. I'd love to grab it if this drive is dead.
