I read somewhere on one of the threads on this excellent forum about DVD's writing better at 4x. Is this the case, or are 8x DVD's any good?

Thanks in advance for anyone who might help!

I just wish I could burn at 8x, I have a NEC ND2100AD that came with my DELL Dimension 8300 that is supposed to burn at 8x but it's only ever burned at 4x or slower. What type of burner do you have?

Hi snapp3r, I have a hypermeda kdvrw8x that came with my tower. I tried to bur at 8x a couple of times and had 1 error. When i burn at 4x, i haven't had any errors. Use a high quality branded media like like ritek ridata, which most of afterdawn members use. I currently use verbatim datalife 4x and 8x for most of my recording and verbatim digital movie 4x for special recordings. I accidentally recorded the verbatim digital movie 4x at 8x on lord of the rings, return of the king. I got lucky and had no errors and it turned out super. I hope this helps you some. bye

speed999,
Did you know that there is an updated driver for your NEC ND2100AD on Dell's site? I have the same drive, & it didn't burn at 8X until I updated the driver (good media withstanding, of course).

Best,

T.J.

I have an NEC ND-3500AG, 16 speed writer.

I had heard that 8x may not be as reliable. But can I buy 8x DVD's and choose to write at 4x? I figure I can then burn data at 8x and DVD at 4x...

Thanks y'all for the replies, don't know where I'd be without you!

This forum rocks!

Yes, you can buy 8X media & burn at 4X. I've heard the same things about video burns at 8X being less reliable.
I imagine that everyone's mileage varies, though...

Good Luck.

It has always been said that the slower the speed, the better the burn.
With todays technically advanced equipment it is normally quite safe to burn dvds at higher speeds.
As a rule I burn all my dvds at 8xspeed on Ritek discs and don't have any problems.
I use a Pioneer 107 with hacked firmware which tries to burn everything at 8xspeed if I let it.
Do whats most suitable for you.
If you get better burns at 1xspeed then stick to that.
Not in any rush are you?
