I have a sony vaio with dvd burner. It was copying dvd's fine using nero recode or dvd shrink, but then I started having problems. Invalid block address during burning, thus ruining my dvd+r's. I saw a thread with the similar problem but it was old and didn't show the answer to my problem. I did try to use the links provided for driver-clean tool which did nothing and registery check which disabled my dvd43. which I then had to reinstall and I accomplished nothing. please help.

Please follow EXACTLY -
Vhen you open Nero Burning ROM, you vill be at zee "New Compilation" window. Directly under the title "New Compilation" is a choice block to choose either zee DVD or zee CD, choose zee "DVD". Directly under that click on zee "DVD Video Icon." Then click "New" in the upper right corner of that screen, NOT zee main screen.
You now are in zee "DVD Video" window. In zee left screen, click "VIDEO_TS". In zee "File Browser" screen, 3rd from zee left, trace your path to zee VIDEO_TS folder, zee one you made earlier holding all of your files and click on that folder. All of your VIDEO_TS files are now opened in zee right screen. Click on zee top file, hold down zee "Shift" key and then click zee bottom file thereby hi-lighting zee entire column of files. Click and (holding zee left mouse button down) drag zee entire column of files to zee open screen, second from zee left and release zee mouse button. Now click zee icon on zee task bar that shows a match on a disc, and then click "OK" and now, clear zee room, stand up tall and shout out, "Burn Baby, BURN" ! One more time, let me hear you say it, "Who's your Daddy Now ???"

Well, I ran into another problem. I used DVD Decrypter to rip, shrink was having a problem encoding. I then used shrink to compress the files so that I could burn on a single verbatim dvd+r. However, after 70% completion, burn failed due to my burner reset itself. I don't know why. With each program or process I use I get a different error. I attached the log file. Any ideas?Jeremy Frey

Have you tried burning anything else ?
A CD for instance ?
Try it for playing a disc also -
If it will burn a CD then we can start looking into Nero.
Lastly, Exactly how much room do you have on your HD ?

ok. it always burns cd's without a hitch. I did couple of things differently, and so far so good. I've successfully burned 4 dvd's in a row. No problem. I did what you said and ditched the Nero wizard. I still received the invalid block address error. Then I slowed down the write speed to 2.4x and deleted all previously burned files. Seems to be working fine, but I've been lucky before and then hit problems again. I have 121GB freespace an hard drive. Funny thing is, I used dvdshrink exclusively when I first started burning with no problem and then the errors and wasted dvdr's just started happening. what do you think?

There are a few things we can check and it won't do anything but update your PC if you need to change something and we may well find that "something" that's messing with your Burning -
The first and most important thing is - what brand of media are you using ? Here's why I ask -
For our education, let's take Memorex as an excellent example as DVD media goes, 90% of Memorex, made by CMC, is sub-standard as far as DVD backups are concerned, figures as high as 50% coasters have been reported (One member bought a stack of 50 and got 23 good burns.), not what I would call an impressive record. Memorex made a name for itself with their magnetic tapes (VHS and audio cassettes) and have been living off it ever since. There are 4 different companies that manufacture Memorex DVD's BTW and product quality varies widely as you might imagine. Only 10% of the Memorex out there, those are discs manufactured by Mitsubishi in the 25 pack spindle , and they're the exception ? they are the good ones. It's easy to see now why the quality of a big-named company can?t be trusted - ? Who?s making your Memorex tonight ??
Is it just Memorex ? No ! I just used Memorex as an example, Princo, Orange Pack, Great AZO and most "store" discs aren?t all that suitable as a DVD backup media ? that?s why we are specific in the type of media we are recommending.
1. * Cheap media freezes, skips, pixelats and may refuse to be recognized by both burners and players :-( Besides "Freezing", "skips" many times you?ll get a ?Cyclic Redundancy error? or an "I/O error". This message can mean that your discs are scratched or dirty, it can also mean that your burner won?t accept your ?cheap? media :-(
Another problem which, ?Pops up? is a ?*Power Calibration Error?. This can stop you right in your tracks and most often is caused by, Yep, you guessed it, inexpensive media. *A ?Power Calibration Error? can also be attributed to the Optical Components of a DVD Writer, though this isn?t usually the case.
Orange Pack, Princo, Great AZO and 90% of Memorex plus many others are just not that good for DVD burning. Those same discs however, are quite good for your MP3 music, picture archives, Spread sheets and Data..Even DataSafe G04?s made by Ritek have been reported as an inferior quality media and are evoking that ?Oh no, I shouldn?t have gotten those.?
What we are suggesting is to download this DVD Identifier to find out who manufactured your DVD and if it's a decent quality.

Once you have your disc identified, click the "More information" icon and see what information you're given. if you're not sure of the quality, come on back and we'll check it out for you -
2. A good grade, Hi-quality media is needed for DVD reproduction ! RiData, Sony, TDK, "Branded" Ritek G04's or "Branded" Verbatim Data Life, Verbatim DataLife plus, Taiyo Yuden's and generally, almost any discs manufactured by Mitsubishi are excellent bets. Among the better discs we're looking for, any media boasting "Advanced Metal AZO" - BUT it must say "METAL" AZO !, this indicates a superior dye and dye application on a good composite disc, while they are sometimes a bit "pricey" they are just the type of media we're looking for to do our DVD backups, Prices online from Meritline.com OR Newegg.com have gotten Ritek G04 starting at about a $ .45 (USD) a disc ?
For DVD backups, purchasing inexpensive media or even average media is a gamble, some people win BUT the majority lose, they lose varying amounts true but, they still lose :-(
Using good grade media can guarantee you one thing to an absolute certainty; it surely cannot hurt.
In an effort to clear the air, when I speak of "Cheap" or "Inexpensive" media, I'm not referring to the price you pay at the counter - I'm referring to poor quality control used during manufacturing and the quality of the dye, dye application or composite type used. I'm not saying it won't burn - Some may burn, some may not. It's quality is inconsistent, meaning it's not dependable. To make matters worse, many times the discs that you do burn may play in your PC BUT your standalone player may not accept them ? what good then is a backup DVD that cannot be watched on a DVD player ?
When I say "Branded," that means that when you pick up a disc in your hand, it says "Ritek" or "RiData" on the disc itself. The monetary cost of the media we recommend many times is cheaper than what you are purchasing now.
We like to verify our information prior to recommending things. There are certain things we look at. For instance, when their dye and dye application are listed as unknown, this almost guarantees us they are using whatever they can get at a cheap price. Companies that use quality materials like to BRAG about it, naming names and staying with quality manufacturers who produce their media.
Using DVD identifier and MediaMatch can help you find out a lot about what you're using. Purchasing your DVD media online can insure that you're getting quality merchandise at a good price. Shopping wisely will save you time, aggravation and money.

There are some things we should check as they have a direct influence over how our drive behaves -
1. Let's check for up-to-date Firmware for your burner.
"OK, so what is this "Firmware" garbage?" Fair question. Firmware is a "tutor" who's job it is to "introduce" all the different kinds of media to your burner and to tell your burner a little bit about it. What type of media it is and at what speed to burn it. As new media in introduced OR, as the Mfgrs of your burner find new ways to use it, new Firmware updates come out to "school" your burner, keeping it up-to-date.
At the bottom of the page look for "What's my firmware? - Try this little tool I found," Download this tool and check out your Firmware's health (up-to-date wise). You can probably get a current upgrade there also ?

Now we need to see if we have a working ASPI Layer.
"Yea right, and ASPI stands for Another Stupid Piece of Insanity, right ?" No, not quite, it stands for "Advanced SCSI Programming Interface". "Well that tells me nothing, what's it do ?" That's a much easier question to answer. It is kind of a "translator" allowing your software to talk your hardware in a manner that your hardware will understand. Let's imagine an Earthman trying to talk to a rock. Now, think of a sledgehammer as being the interface. With the interface in play, the Earthman can tell the rock to disperse into gravel no matter what planet the rock is from, OK ? Good, let's see if we have a sledgehammer ?
2. Check for your ASPI Layer. If one isn't present, we'll need to get one and reinstall it, then reboot our PC to allow it to "settle in".

Finally, we need to check your DMA. "Ooohh, no you're not ! Only my husband or my Doctor checks my "D", "M" . . whatever . . ." No, no, it's OK, DMA stands for "Direct Memory Access" transfer mode OR as we say in the computer field, it's a really, fast way to move stuff. Many PC's today are using UDMA or "Ultra Direct Memory Access transfer mode, or as we like to call it, a really super-duper fast way to move stuff as opposed to the PIO mode. The PIO or Programmed I/O mode, is a technique whereby the system CPU and support hardware directly control the transfer of data between the system and the hard disk since shortly after the beginning of PC's up until the mid-1990's. So we want DMA (fast) more than we PIO (slow).
3. Let's check your Drive's transfer mode. It should be DMA-4, not PIO.
Windows XP downgrades the Ultra DMA transfer mode after receiving six CRC errors and drops it down to the much slower PIO mode.
To enable DMA mode using the Device Manager
1. Open Device Manager
2. Double-click IDE ATA//ATAPI Controllers to display the list of controllers and channels.
3. Right-click the icon for the channel to which your burner is connected and select Properties. Now click the Advanced Settings tab.
4. In the Current Transfer Mode drop-down box, select DMA if available if the current setting says, "PIO Only."
If the drop-down box already says, "DMA if Available" but the current transfer mode is PIO, then the user must "toggle" the settings. That is, change the selection from "DMA if available" to PIO only, and click "OK".
Then repeat the steps above to change the selection to "DMA if available".
OPTION: Right-click the burner and select "Uninstall" and then "OK" all prompts until the PC reboots. Upon rebooting, the PC should "find" your burner and reinstall it setting it by "Default" to DMA.
Lastly, when did you last defrag your Hard Drive (HD) ? If you have to stop and think about the last time you did it, then it's way, way overdue. Here we go, (Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Defragmenter. When it opens, choose your HD, analyses it to see where we stand then if you need it (you probably will) choose Defragment.).
After you finish doing it now you might want to think about having "Scheduled Tasks" in your Control Panel do it for you on a daily basis.
A fragmented HD not only drastically slows down your system but it can cause all number of things to happen inside your PC, a messed up burn being one of them.

I couldn't find the "What's My firmware?" link on the site. I may be more of a newbie than previously thought. I run windows xp, and I can't find the device manager. I remember using it before on an older platform but not on xp. So I wasn't able to check the DMA mode. My aspi layer checker downloaded, I unzipped it and then couldn't find it to run it. I'm not much help to myself. Anyway I burned about 6 dvd's in a row no problem. til today, I was backing up Rounders and right away invalid block address. I try again doing the exact same process and it works fine. I'm at a loss.

OPTION 2. Download it again and lQQk where the file is downloaded, the extracted file s/b there too OR click "Extarct to" and select a location that you know how to find and then extract it to that location.

OK, I was on the wrong site, ran the What's My Firmware. Device: DVD RW DW-U14A Firmware Version: 2.0c. I didn't see any updates available. I did run aspichk 4.70. ASPI Installion Verification stated ERROR: aspi is not properly installed. The error wasn't printed in bold pritn like the rest of the screen (just a note). So I read the instructions on force aspi 1.7. Followed them, ran dumpAspi, then instaAspi, rebooted, ran aspchk and still received the aspi error. I found the device manager and I am running in DMA-4 mode. As far as programs running, the only thing a can think of is my broadband connection and Norton antivirus. In my windows task manager, the applications are empty. Since the last reply I burned the Terminal, but had the same result, one coaster, and then a good burn. It said my dvd burner reset itself again.

Jeremy,
You have GOT to get a decent ASPI layer installed. Clear the ASPI again, reboot then Force ASPI.
Your broadband isn't a problem BUT Norton AV has been known to cause problems - try closing it down -
DO NOT GO ONLINE WITH IT DOWN AND DON'T FORGET TO START IT ONCE YOU'RE DONE !
BTW, Your burner resetting can be attributed to a non-working ASPI

Well it worked for awhile. I got the ASPI layer installed. I then ran aspichk. ASPI is properly installed and fully operational. I burned a few DVD's, then 3 coasters. Invalid block address again and one dvd reset itself. Should I blow up my dvd burner. UGHHHH. What else can we check, Pete?

no we never figured it out. If I restart my computer after each burn, it seems to help. I don't know why. I think I may just have a bad burner. Good luck. If you find an answer please post it here for me, Thx.

i'll let you know! i've just done a full recovery so i'm installing everything bit by bit. It's burning fine with other programs.Just Nero thats gone wrong.

First, NAV has caused some issues in the past. I don't know why . . . McAfee doesn't, Go figure . . . ?
Soooooo, turn off NAV.
Second, Just because you don't see it in your Task Manager doesn't mean anything. You need to shut down all in msconfig ~ ~> startup. "Disable all," Apply, OK, OK again to reboot -
Then give it a try -
BTW, Did you do a Defrag ? You never said -

i've been having the 'invalid block address' this evening on one of my new LG burners. it was mounted internally and reads from discs fine/rips fine, but every time i feed it a Verb TY and try to burn 8x it fails at lead-in with 'invalid block address' (i never do 8x but was seeing what results i'd get at 8x). a 4x write on very same disc was fine. a few times got the same results. as drive is gonna be sent back for swap anyway now as i don't trust it, hooked it up in a USB2 enclosure, same results. the other LG drive lives in a USB2 enclosure, switched that on, and it's been burnig at 8x sweetly all eve. so one burner's faulty and it would appear that i can now burn at the elusive 8x....
...just in case that helps anyone...

Hi all, I see here this stupid error "invalid block address" is something that all of you got. So, ofcourse, I got it too on my god damn new LG that I bought today, burned 2 DVD's at the 8x speed and at the third I wanted to see how it's going at the 4x speed and surprise I got this "invalid block address" error. I want to know something, it's the device bad or it's the writing software bad. I got waranty on the device so I want to know if I should go with it. If you say with other writing programs didn't get this error, what is that program? Thanks

as to your problem, let me guess, you bought an LG 4167B right ?...
either way let's have LAST section of your Nero log which lives in c:\program files\ahead\nero\nerohistory.log but DO NOT post your serial number which usually begins with '1A21' or similar.
You can differentiate sections via this section divider "====== *** Nero-Burning Rom, History File *** ======"
if you're using Nero 6.x that is.
if you're using 7.x let's have LAST section of your Nero log which lives in C:\Program Files\Nero\Nero 7\Core\NeroHistory but DO NOT post your serial number which usually begins with '5C' or similar.
You can differentiate sections via this section divider "====== *** Nero-Burning Rom, History File *** ======"
