Look around this site and you will find a number of different options for backing up a DVD. But if you are just starting out you might try DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter.
!!!You can download both for free!!!

There are guides here to show you how to use the software.

Hey

Just as rroettger said, DVD Shrink, DVD Decrypter and Nero is a good combination to have to backup your DVD's.

There is a guide here: http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/dvd9_to_dvdr_with_dvd_shrink.cfm

That should be able to help you.

Hmmm, I never knew that............................I must be one of the lucky ones then..................I should be so lucky, lucky, lucky, lucky, I should be so lucky with Recooooordnoooooow.........

The hurdle you are encountering is the fact that it looks like you are trying to make a straight forward copy of a commercial disc.
This cannot be done.

All commercial discs contain 'CSS' which is a form of encryption.
This encryption requires to be removed in order for you to read/copy the files to your hard drive.

This process is called 'ripping', the software already suggested will do the trick fine.

Dvd Decrypter/dvd shrink etc.

Download DVD Shrink and have a play around with that, and some useful guides here at Afterdawn (guides section).
When you are happy with that, come back and I shall show you how to burn with Recordnow.

Recordnow is so easy to use, and for a program that 'you can't burn with' I shall show you how..............................as if by magic..........

I always purchase software that I use, I only use software that does exactly what I need it to do.
Nothing more and nothing less.....................

I don't require all the bells and whistles that Nero etc provide, just straight forward burning, and Recordnow fulfills my requirements.....................

Well, I was first introduced to it with a Sony burner that my brother purchased and it was bundled with it.
Recordnow DX.
I trialled it, and it worked a treat.
So I purchased it, £45 for version 4, then upgraded it to 4.5 (free upgrade).
Then I purchased my Dual layer Pioneer 108 burner, and I required DL support - I had reports that earlier versions were not going to support DL media.

So I emailed Sonic and they introduced me to Version 7.2 Deluxe suite - this cost me £40 and am using it ever since.....................worth every penny in my opinion.......................not 1 coaster to date whilst using it (except for the ones I buggered myself)

Goto http://www.sonic.com for details on it...........could be the best software you ever purchase..............................

I don't know whether this link is still active, but I wrote a couple of guides at http://www.chrismccann.co.uk
