Booting DVD-R with AR2 problem

Hi there, im trying to boot a dvd-r ps2 game with my action reply 2 and an unmodded ps2. I must be doing something wrong, any help would be good :)

Basically im followiing the instuctions from the faq on these forums, everything goes well until i have to switch the TOC game for the backup ( the TOC game im using is GTA:SA). When the toc disk stops spinning and i exchange using the slide card and insert the dvd-r, the ps2 then makes a noise like its reading the dvd but then just stops and hangs at the "updating codes" popup and does not boot the game.

I know these disks can be read since it tells me its not a ps2 format disk when i use the standard browser amd i have dvd movies using the same disks that work.
