The technological part of my brain is very, very tiny. By good luck, I happen to have a DVD-writer in my new Dell. It appears to be a Philips "DVD+-RW" 8631. I want to start using it, but I feel a bit feeble when it comes to picking out appropriate blank discs.

I understand that + discs will work on +writers and - on negative, but is it really true that this writer can handle both kinds? Are there any limitations that you know off the top of your head? I've googled for some "compatibility charts" but I can't seem to find this model in the charts.

Thanks for reading!

it should say on the dvd burner box somewhere, what it supports???

if it's new it should handle both, i would try -R first

the other thing is you might want to go to like Wal-Mart and get you some dvd-rw type for your learning deal so you can burn and erase over and over till you get the hang of it

a lot of people in this talk about Ritek G04's they are cheap and a great product haven't had a coaster yet...........

you can order from here

www.allmediaoutlet.com part# (P-DVD-R4XRDLG50)

Genuine Ritek Ridata Branded G04 DVD-R 4X Premium Grade 50-Pack $22.50 free shipping

or

Genuine Ritek Ridata Branded G04 DVD-R 4X Premium
Grade 100-Pack for $41.00 free shipping

hope that helped a little

That is GREAT advice; thanks, I really appreciate it! I was haunting ebay, but shipping costs there are quite high and I didn't see many Ritek discs.

Thanks again for the direction and the tip, that was helpful!

Ooh, wish I had found that before. But this provides me an opportunity to ask another really dumb question. In the chart you linked to, for my writer, they say:
--
8xDVD-R PCAV
4xDVD-RW CLV
16xDVD+R CAV
4xDVD+RW CLV
2.4xDVD+RDL CLV
--
For the 8x-R, for example ... is 8x the highest speed compatible, or the only speed? I.e., are 4x-R discs supposed to be compatible also?

Thanks again for the reference.

You'll be fine if you use 4x disc. And I actually recommend you don't burn faster than 4x.

Y'all have helped me through a serious lack of knowledge. Thank you SO much! It's so great to have a DVD writer at last AND have a clue what to buy for it.

@ smalltown

my dvd writer is a hp630i, it says compatible up to
16X but, from whati read here you shouldn't write quicker than 4X times anyway, it takes away from the finished product end...................

there is a lot of good deals on ebay, but so many people overcharge for shipping.
