All of the DVD-R backups that I've made worked. I made a DVD+R backup and my PS2 wont read it and it makes an odd clicking sound. So can PS2 not read DVD+R's?

Usually versions > 4 play dvd+r but not always, some of the lower versions also play dvd+r if you're lucky. The best thing is to try out ur luck. (i have a ver. 7 and it can't play dvd+r)

I've tried games burned on DVD+R on my cousin's PlayStation2, which was one of the first 500,000 batch of consoles to be released by Sony . I think that should be V1?
