yeah, used that nifty dvdinfo (thanks) program.
these are legitamte G04 disks, and they definetly work badly.

my much berated princo discs work far better, still, i'm gonna lay hands on something better soon, thanks again guys.

Anyone know of a place online that sells discs, presenting the media code upfront? I'd rather that. My places don't.

just tried some more media, was usin TDK and that seemed to work fine with most of my backups, until i backed up burnout 3, with the TDK the whole game stuttered badly, so I backed it up with Verbatim and it runs flawlessly, so im gunna stick with the verbatims for the time being :)

... If you go to http://www.supermediastore.com and click on the media that you're interested in, they will display the media code as part of the description of the product ... by the way, here's a good price for first class (-R) media ... http://www.supermediastore.com/taiyo-yuden-silver-thermal-8x-dvd-r-media-100.html ... http://www.meritline.com also displays the media code ... I haven't had good experiences with them as of late, but they do have a bunch of satisfied customers ...

... Personally, I get (+R) RiDATA branded Ritek discs from NewEgg and they have been coded RICOHJPNR01 and they have been 100% quality all the way ...

what the crap is legacy? This brand probably won't work. And no i always burn at 2x speed, try 4x and chances are u will end up w/ a non-working ps2 backup dvd.

I ran the 3 types of G04's that I have used through DvdInfo and this is what I came up with. There is certainly seems to be a difference between the clear branded hub G04's that I have had trouble with backing up PS2 games and the other 2 types that I have had no problems with in the past. Now I'm no expert and not sure what most of this stuff means but perhaps someone else can figure out what the differenc is.

when I said TDK 8x suck I had burned them at 4x Ive been burning everything at 4x and never had an issue. The whole burning at faster then 2x issue is a hoax that got started somehow. I'm pretty sure the guys at PSOWNZ know what theyre talkin about especially seeing how theyre the # 1 source for home brew PS2 progz. I agree that Maxell do stop working after a while. My friend told me so and I found out the hard way also. Haven't had an issue with memorex though

ok riteks used to be the shit! For anyone new to the riteks and I mean within a few months new I'm sorry you haven't had the greatest of luck with them, but B4 all this crappy batch of riteks came about, they where hands down the best media to buy even better then those expensive store sold brands. I never ever ever burnt a coaster at 4x until the crappy G04's came out.

Just a comment on dvd media. Maxell and TDK are top rated but only -R format. Just because a disc proves reliable in one format like -R it does not follow that the same discs are as good in +R and + or - RW.I recently bought Maxell -RW disc from Argos and they turned out to be Ritek discs. Appparenty maxell can't keep up with demand and contract out to Ritek, these disks are supposed to be same dye quality but they definately aren't.Check out www.nomorecoasters.com

... I just purchased a 50 disc cakebox of Maxell +R discs from OfficeDepot and the ID indicates that they are manufactured by the Maxell company ... As far as 'store brands' go, they are always high quality ... They only use four manufacturers: Maxell, RICOHJPN, Ritek and TYG01 ... The only time I've ever seen Maxell discs ID as Ritek produced is with the -RW format ... For +R I've seen MXL and RICOHJPN; for -R, I've seen MXL and Tayo Yuden; and for +RW RICOHJPN ... All very good stuff, but since my primary usage is +R (99%) the Maxell produced media is definately first class all the way ...

well I must say that the -R ones are crao I mean they do work mint for a while but then end up getting crappier and crappier. Maybe its not an issue with normal data backup or movies but I know with PS2 games it is an issue. TDK is supposed to be good yes that is true but it seams to me like games that stream a lot (GTA, Spiderman 2, Burnout 3, NFSU2 are a few) skip a lot and then with memorex they skipped less but still skipped. The only ones I have been able to use are the Riteks. Weird though that the last batch I got were crap, because of power calibration issues when burning with DVD Decrypter for movies, yet some will work with games perfect still and even the ones that had issues most of the time end up being Burnable. I use Alcohol 120% for my game backup. I dunno Ritek needs to do something and straighten this mess out.
If the new G04's where a women they'd be a cock tease that doesn't put out but, when she does put out she puts out real good.

I have burned hundreds of games on different brands and Ritek G04 use to be my favorite but sometimes games would load slow or freeze on movies or not work at all.

Well I bought some Fuji (Made in Japan) TY02 (Not made in Taiwan, they stink) and they work PERFECT with my NEC 3500a. They are simply the best Media I have ever used for playstation 2.

My backup of ESPN NFL 2k5 would have major skipping and freezing issues on my Ritek. I reburned it to my Fuji DVD-R's (TY02) and it is now flawless!

So I reburned my other games that I had some slow load times or didn't work at all and they all work perfect!

I can burn them up to 12X but I only burn them at 4X and it seems to be working.

So I would recommend TY02 media for PS2 for everyone. It sure makes a difference.

Just bought a 100 PACK OF RITEK G04 from supermedia store, and folks they are CRAP! COASTER after COASTER using these disks. Out of the 50 I tried so far, 10 worked ok, the rest I would receive all kind of read errors.Went to STAPLES and bought a 25 pack of maxell -4x and they have worked great

i believe the G04 are the DVD-r, G05 is + r (8x) or something like that. i dont really know i havent bought ritek for a while, i will post my review on some riteks dvd+r that newegg gave me for free (due to late shipment arrival).Im really happy with some TDK's Dvd+r 100 pack i bought on sale over the weekend at Compusa. they burn great at 4x, works great on ps2 games and dvd backups, cant test them on my xbox because my xbox samsung drive only picks up dvd-r. Dvd identifier identify these tdks as RICOHJPN, we all know they make top of the line blank media : )
