The Xbox either comes with a Thomson, Philips, or Samsung DVD drive.

Typically speaking, if the manufacturing date is BEFORE Oct 2002, there's a high probability that you have a Thomson drive.

The manufacturing date is on the bottom of the Xbox.
To identify which drive you have:

Press the Eject button.
Look at the DVD tray.

If the DVD tray hole in the centre is a straight U shaped, then you have the older DVD Drive (Thomson).

They do not read CD-R discs.
They read DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW, some CD-RW

If the DVD tray hole in the centre is a 'Light Bulb' shaped, then you have the DVD Drive (Philips).

They do not read CD-R discs.
They read CD-RW, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW

If the DVD tray has 2 circular holes on the left and right, then you have the DVD Drive (Samsung).

Samsung's read CD-R/RW, DVD-R/RW, it doesn't read DVD+R/RW

The modchip does not in any way effect what type of discs your Xbox will read. What was said about which type of media each brand of drive can read should only be used as a general guide. Your results will vary. To see if your Xbox will read CD-R discs, pop in a music CD-R disc and see if it will play.
