PS2 v.5 Media Problems

I have both a v.5 and v.6 Ps2 and have been successfully backing up ps2 games for a while now. I have had no problems playing DVD-R backups on my v.6 ps2, but for some reason the same games that play flawlessly on my v.6 will not play on the v.5 . I have been told that the v5 and v6 are virtually the same machine, that there should be no differences. Is this true?
Also i have read that for games that constantly read from the DVD while in play(GTA) that DVD+R is a better choice of media. Will my v5 PS2 read DVD+R's?
