I have an DVD ISO-image with a movie and subtitles (any format, I'll just convert it). I want to add subtitles to it in another language. There's a few guides on the net how to add subtitles to your own DVDs, but not to pre-authored ones (is that the correct term?).

Best solution would be that I'd just replace the subtitles data of language X on the DVD with my own - and if possible, hack the menu image a little to read the name of the new language in the old one's place. It doesn't have to look like original, just that it states the name, and I don't have to remember "Swedish = custom subs".

If there's linux tools available, I'd rather use them.

This would be a good subject for a guide ;-)
