Softmod is MODifying your XBox without the use of a hardware chip, in order to be able to play backup games and/or use a larger hard disk so games will run from there instead of the game DVD's.

Basically what you want to do is flash the onboard BIOS(TSOP)and replace it with a new one.

Beware though this sounds simple but you have to know what you're doing ...
* Only Xbox versions 1.0-1.5 can be flashed. ver. 1.6 can't.
* There's still some soldering required ... (workaround is using a car window repair kit, but you will still need to connect some points on the motherboard.

Complete guide(s) for TSOP flasing and upgrading the hard disk can be found on xbox-scene.com (click tutorials)

My suggestion is to have someone do it for you if you lack one of the skills needed (soldering, above average computer knowledge, etc)

Better fork out $25 - $50 and know for sure it'll work ...

Good luck!

I have a Xbox 1.6 and it's softmodded. Search google for UDE2 if you have a 1.6 and UDE for any Xbox below that. That is all you need, NO SOLDERING NEEDED! It is very easy to intsall. Good luck!

Soft modding = modifying with software.

hard modding = modifying with hardware (mod chip).

Pro: doesn't void your warranty (no opening of xbox required)
Pro: easily reversible if you screw up.
Pro: easy to install (no soldering)
Pro: You CAN go on xbox live with UDE2.

Cons: You only get 99.9% of a hardmod's ability (im not sure what you are missing though)

If you would have read my response:

Softmodding also:
* Requires opening your xbox
* Requires soldering
* Is not THAT easy
* Won't let you use Xbox Live

But to answer the question:
Softmod pros:
- cheaper
- little easier
- no risk of chip/solder coming off

Softmod cons:
- No Xbox live (chips can be turned off, there are free alternatives for xbox live though.
- Bios not upgradable
- Multiple Bios' not supported

I've read your response and it's WRONG. I have a Xbox v1.6 and it is modded with UDE2. It runs backups and everything. I NEVER had to open or solder anything on my Xbox.

I installed it in less than 5 minutes.

If you want to be able ot use xbox live then you must activate your account THEN install the mod.

I dont mean to sound rude or anything. You must be thinking about modchip stuff. I am talking about using ltools and UDE stuff.

I think the 0.1% is that it takes 1 or 2 seconds longer to boot up. Other than that, my UDE2 softmod on my 1.6 is great.
