Glad you are happy with your new printer :-)

I am very pleased with mine. Now if you need some ink later which you will here is a good place to buy them from http://private.abacus24-7.com/ They are cheap around $4 and work well in your printer.

bbmayo,

Those are some good prices on ink if they don't jack you on shipping. I've been paying $6.95 with free shipping. What do they charge for shipping? Either way thats a very good price for the complete set.

Here's a link to a place to get ink that is actually cheaper on individual ink cartridges since the shipping is free. I keep a black and a yellow cartridge on hand since they need to be replaced about twice as often as the other cartridges. I'll bookmark the link bbmayo gave for when I buy a complete set of cartridges. http://www.shop4tech.com/user.htm?mfrg=epson&series=Stylus+Photo+Series&go=show_ink&model=Stylus+Photo+R200+series

hey mort81...

thanks for the add'l link. one question...the $6.95 you mentioned in a couple of posts above...is that from the same site shop4tech? if that's the case, then i think they've raised their prices slightly. the prices i saw are $7.49 for the colors and $7.99 for the black. whereas at Abacus 24-7, the color inks are $4.45 and black is $4.95. and their shipping is $4.95 ground shipping. so in the end there isn't all that much of a difference in price if you end up purchasing more than one ink at a time. it does end up slightly cheaper from shop4tech if you just purchase one ink at a time.

i don't know if there are any major differences in quality of the inks between the two sites.....BUT regardless, when you consider the prices of epson originals, both these sites are fantastic alternatives. so thanks for providing a link to another source..i've bookmarked it as well...much appreciated!

sakmd,
Ya your right they did raise there prices a little since last time I ordered from them. Another place to check before buying is meritline. They run specials all the time with $20 off on the full set and shipping is free.

Hey!!!
I prefer the Canon Pixma CD printer over the Epson R series, first off it is of a better build quality, It's faster than the Epson and the Tray inputing mechanism is smaller and way smoother for quick disc printing. I found the Epson try loading very flimsy...Lastly the print quality is Outstanding. Spray some colour disc protector and you have Strong and lasting print quality that rivals Original Disc's.........The Pixma CD printer's are not available to the US currently Europe only.

That aside the new Lightscribe technology sounds Interesting..It's a matter of time before that will be in colour too..

To anyone looking for a cheap and very good quality disc with the best print surface I've seen yet try the Bulkpaq Orange with Verbatim's 003 Dye (Available mostly In Europe)

The shop4tech ink works well, but I wouldn't get that ink from Meritline that ink is junk. I got some from there and it prints like crap. I ushually buy my ink in the complete set (Comes with 2 black) and that is why I say Abcus is the best deal It also works very well with the R200. Just rying to save you the hearteache I had went threw when buying no-name brand ink. The ones from Abcus24-7 are proven and work very well.

That cannon printer is not available in the US though :-( So all we have to go with right now is the Epson, but I find it hard to belive that the Cannon could print any better? I cant tell the difference in the original from the one I print most of the time. If you have to spray some color disk protector on your disk's then something dosent sound right anyway?

thanks for the info on the meritline ink. I haven't used it myself had only found about it reading posts. I'll stick with shop4tech and give abacus a try when I'm in need of a complete set.

Over the Internet you can find some reviews on the Canon pixma print quality. As an owner of both an Epson R300 and a Canon Pixma(The Canon was a prize my wife won : ) - The print is better in my opinion with the Canon and it's faster full stop. The Epson is still a great printer though.

Now with Inkjet disc printing it's a fact that the ink will smear (More so with the r300 v Canon pixma) when print is of a darker saturation when the disc print is handled with wet hands, moist or sweaty hands..Try licking your finger then rubbing your finger against that cool dark disc you printed and see what happens.. the spray I use on these back up disc's solves that (You should see the way kids handle discs generally and you'd agree, Things like Cola get spilled around our Play station or DVD player occasionally). I understand that protecting the data side is another matter..

The coating as the name suggests simply gives the printed disc a clear matte protection layer. It's completely optional, if your happy with your CD printing without a protection spray then that's fine.

By the way, I wonder if anyone knows of somehere that people can view images of disc's that they printed..Back-up DVD, Games or otherwise, Epson, Canon or Others..or even swap idea's on the software they use for CD labeling...

bbmayo...

I became interested in a protective spray as well after reading Manu_DVD's post. Before I go on, Manu_DVD, thanks for bringing this to out attention. :)

While I have been more than happy with the results of the r200, the smudging part is true. I didn't try the 'lick the finger' test as Manu_DVD had suggested ;), but I did moisten the tip of my finger with some water and tried a touch test w/ a copy of a 'Hero' disc I had printed. I chose this as the disc is predominantly black. And it did infact smudge and ink came off. So I did some searching on the protective spray stuff. While I'm quite careful w/ DVDs, and didn't think I would have a problem, I became curious about the longterm...humidity, lending them out and how others would handle the discs, etc. So this piqued my interests further. Not sure what Manu_DVD is using, but I came across this thread on vidoehelp.com

http://www.videohelp.com/forum/archive/t243881.html

The person who started the thread apparently had done some testing of several different sprays and came up with one which he believed was the best of those he tested. Manufactured by a company called Plaid, it's called Patricia Nimock's Clear Acrylic Sealer. It comes in Matte and Gloss.

Wanting to try it out immediately, I headed off to the local Wal-Mart where I found this particular product in the arts and craft section. I tried it out on a few DVDs and I must say this stuff is amazing!! Not only does it provide complete protection from water, smuding, etc, it gives the disc a whole new look....very professional looking! Just adds to the brilliance of the printed disc. I used the Gloss version of the spray. It's a nice gloss as well. Not too glossy as to make it look tacky or anything. I've got a few more I'd like to try...and I'll try to take some before and after shots and post them here. Hopefully, that will give an idea of what the results will be should you, or anyone else, decide to try it. I'll try to do this tomorrow.

One of my worries when reading about spraying discs is if it would affect playaback by getting getting on the writable surface underneath. But if done with care, this doesn't become an issue. I used another techique to do the spraying that I read on the above link as well. If you want, I'll describe it as well. I've tested one finished discs on my dvd player, and they all play fine. Visual inspection of the others seemed to be ok. I didn't noitce anything on the writable surface....they looked clean and unscathed. I'm always the skeptic, but spraying with this gloss spray has given the discs a beautiful finish...more than I had expected.

I'm not sure what Manu_DVD uses, but this Nimock's is quite nice.

I'm sure you'll want to see what Manu-DVD uses, but should you eventually decide you want to try the Nimock's spray and want to know where to find it, I found another link on the same thread posted above

http://www.folkartpaint.com/retailHome.asp

This is for the Plaid website. Type in your zip code and it will give you a listing of stores that carry their products. It won't tell you if the spray is there specifically, but it's a place to start. Wal-Mart came up as one of the places near me, so I went there first and they had it.

In my search, I did find a couple of websites that sell one product in particular. Apparently specific for CD/DVD printable use. But the info on this product was limited. So I wasn't sure what it was all about. And also I was in that 'had to try it' mood, so wanted to try something that was readily available and not have to order and wait. Plus it was $15 bucks, whereas the Nimock spray is less than $5. If you want to see the the CD/DVD spray, here's a link to one of the retailers I came across:

http://store.run-pc.com/incdprot.html

Hope this helps!

Hello again,

This product sounds great and at a good price too, being from Germany I am unaware of this brand but you did give me an idea to visit maybe an arts and crafts shop to find this or similiar. Acrylic Sealer spary is what I beleive is basically the same as purpose made disc sprays. As we all know specially made for CD / DVD protection sprays can be more expensive. I use a matt spray from Dutch company DISCPRINT called Colour Fix Spray, I also have used Seiko Colour Fix which gives nice results too..

Like the person above said, you need to use caution when spraying, to avoid spray on the inner circle I simply use the padded ring that often comes with Spindle (Cakebox) packaging, it's the exact size of the inner circle of the disc. I buy both Sprays online.

manu_dvd,

i use a technique similar to yours for spraying discs. i too use the foam rings. i also make use of a cake box...a small one that holds about 10-12 discs. makes things a lot easier and much nicer. since i've been doing more of these, i've also realized that a little goes a long way! doesn't take much to add the final touches on the finished product. i just use a a few short sprays and it does the job. hopefully, this week, i'll get around to posting a few pics so you, and others, can see. the spray i metioned above works quite well. provides excellent protection and it really brings some of the color out. if you have some pics of discs with the product you've been using, i'd certianly be interested in seeing them. from the product description that you had listed, it sounds like it does a similar job. have you tried finding an acrylic sealer to see if there is any difference? anway, i'll try to get some shots up in the next few days.....

Hi sakmd,

I would be indeed interested seeing pictures of your sprayed DVD back up's..Also please tell me what Printable disc's you are using, media code etc..
I am currently using Bulkpaq with Verbatim's MCC 003 dye. The print surface is very smooth and the disc dye provides almost flawless burning and playback.

I have tried numerous methods and sprays and I think the Cakebox (I use a standard 25 piece spindle) is more than sufficient for small spraying jobs.
The cakebox provides dust free drying time. As some printable DVD's differ in hub size (Some inner circles are larger or smaller) I use rings cut out of padded paper. Your right in suggesting that a few short sprays is enough to give a lasting protective layer and can bring out the vibrancy of the colours.

For those Intersted, Right now I am using a spray by a company called BELTON (I think this company is German).(It's a clear gloss Acrylic Lacquer. Once applied the DVD / CD Surface is dust dry and handable in 20 mins - Student friendly in 2 hours - Industrial proff after 10 Hrs!!

I hope to post some pic's here soon.

do you like the belton spray you are using now over the coulour fix spray you had mentioned earlier?

hopefully, tomorrow evening i'll have time to post some pics to share!

Thanks to all of you for this informative thread.

I have just purchased an R200 and would like to print discs without using the Epson Print CD software. I'm currently in the habit of printing disc labels directly from Jasc Paint Shop Pro, and would like to continue to do so. But I'm not sure what paper size settings to use when using the CD tray, or how to align the disc image within that "page".

I don't mind experimenting, but if anybody already knows the answer it could a bunch of wasted discs.

Thanks!

I think to save the heart eche you should use your proggy to design your disk and then save it as a .jpeg and then use the Epson software. I use Adobe Photo Shop to design my label's and then use the Epson softwae to print the disk I just insert the picture I created as the background and it fills in perfectly. :-)
I eventually was able to print with Adobe but it still wasent as good and easy as using the Epson software. There are some settings in the Epson Software you just can't do with other proggys like how hard the print head hits the disk. I up'ed mine to +1 and get much better print quality.
