use your proggy to design your disk and then save it as a .jpeg and then use the Epson software.
That did turn out to be surprisingly fast and easy. I used a PNG to avoid jpeg lossiness and it worked fine. Will probably just stick with this approach. Thanks!

OK I am just now getting into hub printables and what not. From what I have been reading I should get WHITE hub printable DVD's (probably from supermedia) and the epson r200 I have been reading works very well. How exactly does the printer print onto the dvd? Is there a place to insert the dvd? What type of hub printable dvd's does everyone suggest for best price and quality?

the R200 is cheap and prints as well as the 300 and other brands 3-5 times the price (for CD/DVD - not photo). The ink is of course as expensive as the unit, about 80-100 bucks for all six cartridges but I get about 300-350 disks per set (manufactured not re-inked).

The only complain I've had is that sometimes the eject sensor on mine flakes and the rollers keep spinning until you manually pull the tray from the machine - which is not a problem really as that is something you would normally do anyway.

BTW, I cannot honestly recommend Atlantic Inkjet as they are a reinking company that does NOT always make that readily apparent when you order. I ordered from a page I got to from a search engine. Nowhere did it say they were remanufactured cartridges (I probably should have guessed from the price-duh!). I got the box and stuck it on the shelf awaiting when it would be needed. A couple of months later I opened the box only to see Atlantic Re-Inking on the invoice head... huh? The first cartridge leaked and all the cartridges registered between half and three quarters full right off the bat. The useage seems for some reason to be greater as well. I went back to Epson cartridges.

Moorebaby,
You may want to look here for your ink. This is where I have bought most of my Epson R200 ink, and it works just as good as original.

I have the Epson R300 and love it. Instead of worrying about how to fit the picture to the DVD for printing, use the background option and your DVD cover will be perfectly fit to the DVD. For the inner ring I use 22mm setting because I am using dvd-r blanks that are printable right up to the holw.

With the Epson models, there is a flip down door that is accessed after opening the door for the paper feeder. The unit comes with a very thin slide tray that holds the cd or dvd. You place the cd or dvd on the tray then slide it in and line it up with large arrows that are on the printer body and on the slide in tray. It works really neat and does an excellent job. As far as ink is concerned, I always purchase it from OmniPro in Miami, FL Their URL is:

Since I am in California I purchase from out of state so there is now tax on my purchases. I have found that OmniPro has very good prices.

I forgot to mention the type of White Inkjet Printable DVD-R's that I use. I use 8X PowerMatrix White Inkjet Printable DVD-R from allmediaoutlet.com

http://www.allmediaoutlet.com/allmedia/powermatrix-dvd-media-exclusive-subcat-19.htm

Those DVD-R's allow you to print right up to the hole if you use an inner ring size of 22mm on the Epson cd/dvd print software.

I just purchased an Epson R200. The software is pretty easy and the print quality is good. I was wondering if any of you had an update on putting an areosol coating on the printed disc(print side of course). I could not find any of the fixatives that are available in Germany that are specifically for this at US sites. I can find the other sprays mentioned but wondered if anyone had problems with these.
Thanks

hi pbyrt...

not sure if you saw the second page of this thread, but there you'll see that i posted in some detail (with links) what i use to coat the discs. the short of it...i used a gloss acrylic sealer called Patricia Nimock's. Got mine at Wal-Mart in the arts and crafts section. i've sprayed close to 75 discs now without any problems. hope this helps!

@sakmd

How long have you been spraying the discs for? I'm curious whether they will eventually give problems, like labels do (they work fine at first, but after a few months some of them make the disc unreadable)

If you love something set it free, if it comes back it is yours and always was, if it doesn't HUNT IT DOWN AND KILL IT !!!

Hi SAKMD
Yes I read all of your post. I purchased some of the Patricia Nimock's from Walmart. I have printed a number of disc but only sprayed one. I was told that if I sprayed the disc on a flat surface I would not get an even spray, so I put Saran Wrap in a slim case than put the disc in the case and hung the case on a nail.( I also protected the hub.) I gave it 3 light coats. No spray got on the play side. After it dried I played the disc again with no problems. However this morning I tested to see if the disc was waterproof and some of the ink would still smudge off. The disc had dried for about 18 hours. Do you spray yours on a flat surface and how many coats do you use? At what temperature do you do you spray the disc? Also, I used satin not gloss.
Thanks

dsyf3r,

i've been spraying for only a couple of months now...but, to date, have not had a single problem. just the other day, i watched a couple that were among the first few i ever coated, and they played flawlessly. i've also lent discs out to people and they haven't had any problems in their players. these same people would occassinally have probs w/ discs that i had labelled. i've also spoken to a few people who have been spraying much longer than i have, and they have yet to encounter any problems either. perhaps in another few months i can give another progress report...but so far so good! and as far as i know, the spray won't cause any balance problems which labelled discs have been accused of. hope this helps a little...

not sure exactly why your discs are still smudging, as i have not had that problem. granted, i don't test each disc after spraying. but i did do so with several when i first started, and didn't have any issues. when i first started, i was only doing one at a time, using a small spindle i had that was not being used. however, this one at a time thing got to be a pain for me, and not very efficient, as i would have several waiting to be coated. so i started using slim cases (as you mentioned) since i didn't have anymore small spindles around. here's what i do...

for the slim cases, i just place the disc in the case...i never covered it with saran wrap or anything. and i haven't had any problems with the spray getting on the playing surface. just made sure the disc was securely placed in the case. but the saran wrap is not a bad idea...certainly would have nothing to do with the prob you are having. i do lay out newspaper first, on the counter surface i'm using, just to protect the counter. then lay out the cases. for the ones waiting to be sprayed, i keep the cases closed. for the disc i am spraying...i hold the can at about chest level, maybe even a little higher (so it ends up being more of a misting of the disc providing more coverage), and spray a few short bursts down onto the disc surface. i then flip the cover closed so as to avoid any dust, lint, etc falling onto the wet surface. set it aside, and get to the next one. i also spray at room temprature...the temp in the room is usually around 70-72F. it's good to stay near the recommended temp for the spray. the first couple i did were ok, but the fumes were a bit much. so, i opened a sliding door in the room i was spraying in to provide a little more venitllation. well, it was quite cool out..and the outside air dropped the temp inside. prob to about the mid-low 60's. that was a mistake. the spray, at those temps, didn't set in well. it became really goopy..and didn't dry or coat well.

that's pretty much what i do. i don't hang the case, so i'm not sure if that might cause a prob. even with laying the cases flat, by spraying at chest level, for me, i tend to get even coats. by spraying at a decent height, and producing a mist, if there is an area or areas that seems to be less coated (sometimes near the outer edges of the disc)...you can mist over those areas without it appearing oversprayed. and i don't coat more than once...i.e. i don't coat again after the disc dries.

i think i may have gotten a bit wordy, but hope you were able to follow what i did, and that it helps a little...if you have any other questions, don't hesitiate...

Thanks for the info. I think my problem may be that I am hanging the disc, so more of the coating is just falling to the ground instead of on the disc. I am trying to spray in the garage so it is a little cooler than 72. I will give it a try when it is a little warmer. Also do you use glossy or satin.

hey pbryt..

i use the gloss spray...gives a rather nice finish and brings out some of the color. also, it's not too glossy or tacky looking...

I've decided to start spraying my dvd's as well - I haven't bought anything yet - however, I had this stuff already and I was wondering if it's just as good to use: it's RoyalCoat hi-Gloss finish.

It just says perfect for protecting finishes. Also, it's ok to use on plastic/metal ect. It also says it's fine for any "Paitable surfaces"....

what do you think?
