Hello, i just bought a NEC dvd burner, and it works fine so far, however my friends told me that i still need to download and update the firmware. I was just wondering what is firmware and how does it help the burner? is it necesary to download and update it? thanks alot.

As a general rule, if you AREN'T having any problems with your drive, then don't mess with it. The reason being, if you try to update your DVD drive with the WRONG firmware version it can ruin your drive, making it unusable.
