Hello,

Here is a little test that we conducted. Hopefully it helps you to choose your dvd-r disks in the future. More to come on bulkpaq gen 4 when they arrive.

LYNXDV, INFINITI AND DISCPLANET DVD-R TEST

This small test was conducted by using a 60 Discplanet, 60 Infiniti and 25 LynxDV
DVD-R discs, all those should be capable of 2X burning. The disks were test
burned in:

* Pioneer A03 (fw 1.68 rpc-1 2x4all)
* Sony DRU-500A (fw 1.0d)

The disks were tested on following DVD players:

* Sony NS700
* Philips DVDr-1000
* PS2 (v4 PAL)
* Xbox.

The test disk ADVDINFO is as follows (Pre-recorded info in Lead-In = Manufacturer)

INFINITI
00 6A 00 00 01 40 C1 FD 9E D8 50 00 02 8A 0D 14 .J...@....P.....
88 88 80 00 03 54 44 4B 47 30 32 00 04 30 30 30 .....TDKG02..000
30 30 30 00 05 CC C0 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 000.............

DISCPLANET
00 6A 00 00 01 40 C1 FD 9E D8 50 00 02 8A 0D 14 .J...@....P.....
88 88 80 00 03 54 44 4B 47 30 32 00 04 30 30 30 .....TDKG02..000
30 30 30 00 05 CC C0 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 000.............

LYNXDV
00 6A 00 00 01 40 C1 FD 9E D8 50 00 02 79 0E 0B .J...@....P..Y..
FE FF 80 00 03 52 49 54 45 4B 47 00 04 30 33 00 .....RITEKG..03.
00 00 00 00 05 88 80 00 00 00 01 00 00 00 00 00 ................

From this, we have one interesting finding. Discplanet and Infiniti should be
Ritek manufactured disks, but for some reason, the disks we got from
"Lord of the Deals" webshop were TDK Gen 2. The seller has not been able to
answer our requests of explanation why we received such disks, an order placed
one day before us received Ritek disks... screw the non-UK customers policy in
that shop? Avoid it.

THE TEST
--------

We tested writing both PS2 images and DVD-movie backups.

INFINITI & DISPLANET

Basically they are the same disc, from same maker, different brand.

+ They write as 2X on Sony DRU-500a and on Pioneer A03 with hacked 2x4all
firmware 1.68. On non-hacked firmware, they write only 1x.
+ They work on the standalone DVD players

- They don't work on PS2: no movies, no PS2 DVD games
- They don't work on Xbox: no movies, No Xbox DVD games
- They are prone to errors, during writing, don't touch the machine
- 1 out of 10 disks contained writing errors on 2X

Conclusion: this disk (if TDK Gen 2) is good for data backup and movie backup.
There are no errors on the outer rim of the disks after writing, no wobbling on movie playing
and no pixeleration. The disk is not good for console use.

LYNXDV

This Ritek (Generation 3) disk is branded as LynxDV and comes with spindles of 25
or in single units.

+ They write 1x on Sony DRU-500A and 2x on Pioneer A03 with hacked 2x4all
firmware 1.68. On non-hacked firmware, they write only 1x.
+ They work on standalone DVD players
+ They work perfectly on PS2
+ They work perfectly on Xbox
+ All disks were written without errors

- Only 1x for Sony, which is sad. Future firmware updates might improve the
situation.

Conclusion: this disk is good 2X disk for both movie, data and console backups.
There are no errors on the outer rim of the disks after writing, no wobbling on movie playing
and no pixeleration.

There are lots of brands of DVD-R that are really manufactured by Ritek. If you can find Ritek Gen 3
(with dark purply dye) disks, they are usually a safe bet to buy, regardles of the
brand they are.

Note: to Pioneer A04 users, use fw version 1.31 to achieve 2X burning on both of
the disks. 2x4all firmware hacks can be found also to other A04 firware revisions.

Yours,

Pehu

Pehu, thank you for quite thorough test review.

Could you kindly tell us what authoring and/or burning sw were used in these tests?

You already know but for other readers information I can confirm that with Sony DRU500 you can burn Bulkpaq Generation 4 disk at 2 speed without problems. Bulkpaq gen. 4 has also that TDKG02..000 manufacturer information. Still they work ok!

I have burned the disks with DVDDecrypter and played them with: PS2, CyberHome 528 (standalone) and ASUS (pc dvd-rom). My friends Sony NS900 play them too. So no "lasinalusia" yet.

Latest Nero and Prassi PrimoDVD 2.0

As I said in the test, they do burn quite OK in Sony and in Pioneer, but the problem comes with the compatibility in PS2 and Xbox. My PALV4 was not able to play them, with two exceptions, in both cases it loads the game veeeery slooowly. So not that good disk. In new V5 or V6 machines they might work, since Sony has changed them to understand +R disks as well. But I was not able to test them in newer models, unfortunately.

The play well in standalone players, with occasional errors "disk is dirty" if you try to jump too much between chapters. But fast forwarding and normal viewing don't cause any problems at all.

A good plus to them is that they really burn 2x in DRU-500, which at the moment is quite picky about the medias they will burn at high speeds. When the firmware matures and the mediatables will get updated, things propably will change.

Does anyone know what is wrong with my system: I just bought Bulkpaq 2x gen4 green disks and my Sony DRU500 (1.0d) does not even recognize them, ie. in Nero I just get "no media or drive not ready message". Maxell DVD-R disks work fine in my drive. Does Bulkpaq use different manufacturers, did I by chance just happen to get 25 bad disks or what is going on?

How can I tell if the disk I am buying is a generation 3 Ritek disk? Are they the disks with the gold top, or any Ritek disk with the dark purple bottom?
Thanks
