I had this exact problem with the exact game! I am/was using Memorex 8x DVD-R's. I was told that these too are an inferior media type. I am actually getting some Verbatims this weekend.

Anyway, aside from that, I "DeSelected" the Burn-Proof option when I burned the backup with DVD Decrypter. Also, as everyone else has already mentioned - I burnt at 1x and had nothing else running on my PC at the time.

I don't know the exact 'cause of what happened, but my second backup attempt took the "lag" out of the game. In comparison to my OEM version, there's a slight more delay in the backup, but if you were someone who never played the OEM version religiously, you seriously can't tell.
