gorec9897... actually the label does not degrade the layer the disc is written on as you state. You can remove the label and the disc should play fine once again. Case in point, try ripping a disc that has a label on it for a long period of time ( a few months). In many cases you will get some kind of read error during the process. Now take the label off makign sure not to scratch the underside of the disc. Now try ripping it again. It should work fine now.

So in conclussion, you were on the right track, but not 100% accurate, but I agree that some people may be lucky and have a good DVD player that will play anything. I have a 6 year old Toshiba that plays all the DVD's ok, but the same disc pixelate and freeze in most of my other players (2 Pioneer, 1 JVC, 1 panasonic. Also, the labels once applied, really make it hard for my PS2 to read the disc. Once removed, they play fine again. I have tried all kinds of media, from the best (Taiyo Yuden, Maxell, Verbatim, Ritek) to the cheapest (Benq, Prodisc, No name..etc) and I find this is almost always the case.

One huge factor is the adhesive on the labels themselves; ever take a piece of tape and place it on the wall and then peel it off? If you have it peels off quickly with no damage to the wall. Now let?s take another piece of tape and place it on the same wall, only this time leave the tape on the wall for a few months then peel it off; usually after 2 months when you finally take off the piece of tape you peel off some of the wall paper with it causing damage.

Case in point, leaving a cd label on the dvd/cd for a period of time will bind itself to the disc and in turn degrade the layer the data is written to or make it more difficult for cheaper lasers to read properly.

I have found that even after years, if you have a good laser (console/stand alone) the disc with the label should still read the disc perfectly as if a label was not there. If you buy a quality DVD player or one of the better ps2 units you shouldn?t have a problem with labeling.
yellows, you missed the point; you didnt grasp the concept...I didn?t say that removing the label would not help/fix; I said the adhesive binds to the cd/dvd, this is why when you initally put a label on the disc it will play perfectly, but after the label has been on the disc for a period of time it will create disc errors and skipping and problems with some dvd players (hence the word degrade - I didnt say permanent degrade or ruin the data layer) ;)

did you really think I was saying the disc is junk and even if you remove the label it would not remedy the problem :D your agruement is void!

The main thing with labels is to center them as accurately as possible. I have a special technique where I use all of the label to the very center. They also can peel off inside your player if it gets to hot. If they go bad after several months it could just be your media.

I have since switched to ink jet printable Ty DVD media.
