I have just recently started looking into making my xbox play backup games but i need to know one thing, do I NEED a modchip to do this or do I just need a bios? thank you and again sorry for sounding a n00b

Yes you need a mod chip, it's what you instal/flash with the bios.

You cuold flash the onboard bios (tsop) so the answer isn't yes to needing a modchip. You would in fact turn the onboard tsop into it's own chip. Delending on the version of xbox you have,it could be as easy as ten minutes and pretty stable too.
