OK, heres the deal: I've looked around the forums to try and find a solution to my problem, but I haven't found anything that would help me. My burner is EXTREMELY slow. It takes about 2.5 hrs to burn a full dvd. I have a memorex true-8x and i'm using Sony DVD-/+ RW. I tried doing all the changing the PIO to DMA but no matter what I do it wont work.. Please god help me.

Did it always take this long? If not, when did it start taking so long?

I'm not understanding the end of the above statement? Are you saying that the change from PIO to DMA worked? Also, how many hard drives are on your system? If you're running multiple hard drives and one is stuck in PIO mode. Then try copying to the master drive and burning from that one.

My mistake, I wasn't as clear as I wanted to be. I can't get it from PIO to DMA and i'm only running 1 hard drive.

swpkigy,
How long does it take to read a DVD? For example, copy a full DVD to your harddrive using DVD Decrypter or DVD Shrink (without any shrinking).
Anyone know of any programs that can be used to check the transfer rate of a USB port?
Have you tried another USB port? (I assume your PC has more than one) Are you using a USB hub?

swpkigy -
Here's what I'm assuming from the information I've seen you post. Since your computer is only 1 year old, your mobo shouldn't be a problem (DMA issue). You're using an external Sony dvd writer connected to your 2.0 USB port. If it's only taking 5 minutes to copy a dvd to your hard drive that's pretty good. I'm thinking it has to do with your Hard Drive. Even if it's in PIO mode, with your system settings it should still only take around 40-50 minutes to write to a DVD with your system. So have you tried using DVD Decrypter to burn the DVD? I'm not sure what the norm is for Roxio? But with DVD Decryptor and your system, it should take 10-13 minutes for a normal DVD. That is if your hard drive you're burning from is in DMA mode.
Got another question. How many hard drives do you have on your computer? If you only have one. And you have tried doing the PIO to DMA suggestions, then I'm wondering if your cable may be bad or if it's hooked up in the slave position (middle of the cable normally). If you have multiple hard drives than it could be with the configuration of Master and slave which can be easily tested. Let me know.

Thanks all for the help, but I found the solution. I tried unplugging the burner then reinstalling it but it didnt work.. On Christmas I got an iPod mini and since all my other USB ports were taken, I had to use that one. I had uninstalled it a long time ago when it still didnt work both primary/secondy ide. Unplug iPod, plug in burner, viola! reinstalls. I forgot that I had even uninstalled it and then I figured I'd check the DMA there were all there except for one on the secondary which was on PIO but I switched to DMA and then restarted and it stayed. I havent had a chance to do a full burn, but I burned a 30 min show to a dvdrw and it took about 25 mins. Goo improvement and I know that my dvdrw only burn at 2x with this media so this is prob the closest I can get. Thanks all for the advice, I feel stupid after waiting for so long.. :)
