DVD to AVI to H340?

Ok, I am trying to take the DVD's I have and make them into .avi files that I can then convert using VirtualDub so I can put the file on my iRiver H340 and play it during work. All I really need help with is getting the DVD into a .avi that I can convert. I have tried DVDtoAVI and DVDdecryptor then to AutoGK to convert the fiels to .avi, but I have not got either to work for me.

Using the DVDdecrypt method I have actually gotten a working .avi file, but it does not have sound so I know even if it does work on my iRiver H340 it won't play sound, I haven't tested it to see if at least the video would work, ill get back on that.

If anyone has any ideas or could go into eplicit details on how to convert a DVD to .avi file then please post it, because i really need help.

PS: I have done a search through the forums, but it seems I always get useless threads that don't aply to what I am talking about.
