My SONY DVD burner

I have been told that, inspite of using DVDfreeze, burning with DVD DEcrypter, and still not being able to write to my blank DVD disks rw,+r, -r, etc., I need to upgrade the firmware of my Sony burner from rev. 1.0 to 1.1a. I found the download that does the flashing of the drive. My question is: IF this is true, do I have to uninstall any software first like the above mentioned programs or can I just Reboot Win XP and run the new REv. 1.1a flasing program to update the burner?
