CD swap magic 3.0 "...PS2 format disc" error

every time I load my CD swap magic, I get a "please insert a Playstation or Playstation 2 format disc" error. I belive it has something to do wit the setting of the cog on my laser, but when I try to fix it, it seemingly only works untill I put it back together when a new error comes up.

also, is there a reason why different settings of the cog seem to boot normal games ok but backups poorly and vice versa?
