I have copied games to my hard drive before and always get an ISO and .mds file. What is the purpose of an mds file?

yes
when using DVD Decrypter, which i think is the easiest
it automatically links the files.

I downloaded a game and I have only an ISO after using WinRAR. If I burn to DVDR will it work on my PS2?

so is that the only purpose of the file? if it is, that is the one of the easiest ways to make people confused.

if you have a iso file you can burn it to disc.like hursty said
dvd decrpyter
mode>file>iso>write
p.s....your first post was a little confusing, when copying them from original source, you are left with a mds file, when downloading, you extract then burn iso, both do the same thing, but the termanology is slighty different

modded,

Yes, that will work. Assuming your ps2 is modded.

kinza,

The .mds file is a cuesheet for the .iso file.

Let's say your hard drive is using the FAT32 file system. Any file over 4gb will be split up because FAT32 doesn't support files over 4gb.

For example, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater:
If you were using a FAT32 formatted hard drive the .iso file would be split up like this.

- mgs3.I00 (4,194,302 kb)
- mgs3.I01 (275,698 kb)
- mgs3.mds (5kb)

In this case, you would select the .mds file and it will link the .I00 and .I01 files together.

dvd decrypter does not recognise metal gear solid substance (pal vesion)when inserted into my dvd_rom drive, it stalls on medium not present or something, at the moment my dvd-burner is not in my pc (just bought it) could this be why?, i do have a drive that reads dvd rom's though and that regognises my ps2 discs and dvd's, exept from the game mentioned and xploder ps2 cheat system..
how can i get around this?

metal gear ;substance is a DVD-9 anyway, too big to fit on 4.7gb dvd,so unless you know how to split files onto 2 dvd's,or get it working on a dual layer dvd,i wouldnt bother trying to copy this game.

I have a question. I used the latest DVD Decrypter for the first time today and I wanted to write at 1x speed so I put the speed in the right lower part on 1x and start burning. Then I noticed that it just burned on 4x speed?? How to put my writing speed on 1x and actually write at that speed?

Spunkie - Its either your dvd's or your burner. Either or both will only write at 4x. Try diff DVD's first. If it still writes at 4x, then your burner will only write at 4x
