PC Club Generic DVD-Rs, what do you think of them?

What do you think of these type of DVDRs, they are extremely cheap, you can get like 100 for less than $30. My friend says they arn't good for DVD backups and really should only be used for data archiving. Does anyone agree or has more insight on these generic DVDR brands?

Without knowing anything about these disks, I'd say the general rule of thumb with blank media is that you get what you pay for. Besides just considering weither or not a disk will give you a good burn, you also have to keep in mind the longevity of the final product. Cheap media often has very short archival life span. 47 cents for each Taiyo Yuden disk seems a small price to pay for the knowledge that my burns will hold up for many years.

How so, once written, a disc is a disc, isn't it? So how would the archival life span be very short once written on the disc? This is assuming you don't scratch or brake it.

All technology goes by the same guidelines. If you buy a cheap tv, its more likely to break down before a well made tv. Same with cars, refrigerators, etc. With blank digital media, a disk is not a disk is not a disk. Every single manufacturer uses a different kind of dye. The dye is what the info is written on. Hence, cheap disks equal cheap dye. Some things that make cheap dye cheap is its ability to be written on successfuly, and its ability to mantain that info over time.

Those are the two reason to stay away from cheap media. First, you are less likely to get a good burn initially. Second, good burns are more likely to become unreadable within some indeterminate span of time.
