Let me know if anything is unclear for the instructions and such. And if nothing is working out right. I havnt actually tested my packed up setup yet (since I modified what I originally had on my boot cd)

Just have a quick question... do I actually need a mod chip to get this to work, you all said "boot cd" but if you need a mod chip to use it, its not really a bootable cd unless you have one. I know there is a way to boot a burned cd without a mod chip ( I have done it with dreamcast), but I haven't come accross any way to do it with PS1 or PS2. Basically I would like to know if this works withough a modchip...if anyone has any ideas that would be awesome! Thanx -

You will need a mod chip of some sort for my boot cd to work. When I say "bootcd" I mean that it has everything you need on one cd to play snes or genisis games as well as geting into the HDD where all your normal ps2 games should be.
This is mainly for lazy people like myself who do not like swapping discs ever (now that I have the hdd)
I can make this into a MC exploit as well. But you would lose the snes and genesis functions. Well I guess I could keep the genisis since it is designed to work off the hdd. (havnt tested it yet though) But the other main reason for my boot cd was because the exploit usually takes 1 - 3 mb of space on a 8 mb mc. So I didnt want to be wasting all that space when I could be using it for game saves. If I made this into a MC exploit I would have to dump a LOT of the programs that I have on the boot cd because it is currently 7 mb. It would completly fill ONE entire MC.
ALso you would need a ps1 disc as the boot disc, and then you would need some sort of swap method to play a snes emulator.
I could possibly make a exploit that loads launchelf off the exploit, then make a second disc that you could use with cogswap loader. That disc could be the EXACT same as the one currently availible. In fact I could make cogswap loader the default boot elf with the exploit. The problem is ANYTIME you wanted to run a ps2 elf file you would need to do the swap. Which completly takes the purpose of this disc away.
Let me know if there is a desire for such an exploit and I will make one up real quick. Also let me know what you think is the best method.
I can make it load into launchelf, and include the hdloader, and genesis, and cogswap. Then you can load the basic 3. If you wanted ALL the functions, you could then use cogswap loader to swap into my REAL boot cd and have ALL the fuinctions. But this way at least you could get to the hd with a nice GUI version instead of using that stupid ps2menu (sorry to the guy that made it but I find it NOT user friendly)

If you have AR or GS you can use the knife trick to swap it in and try it out. Info on how to do it can be found all over the web.

you know, I never have tried it on DVD, I supose it may be possible. I have not looked at the boot method of a DVD game to see if there is a difference. You could give it a try and see. DVD's are less than CD's around here anyway. I get 50 DVD's for $10 CDN, and 50 CD's for $14 CDN.

I tried it as well on DVD and it didnt work. I am pretty sure that the DVD player is not designed to play elf files. Or there is something else at work here.
Anyway I have about 100 Snes games, 60 Genisis games and a bunch of Sega games all on one CD and still have 200 MB left. So I dont think there is a need to play off DVD yet.
As for the mod chip question:
I boot of a Duo2 SR mod chip. But ANY mod chip that allows you to direct boot of a CD based PS2 game will work fine. I have been working with another guy that had troubles using swap magic. He finally got it to work by a cross between Keylauncher and my CD. I suspect the dummy file is what did it. I am going to be making a new cd revision that will include this dummy file. This should allow my CD to boot with ANY current swap method, as well as ANY mod chip.
If anyone has noticed it didnt work for them, and what they did to fix it I would love to hear about it. That way I can fix it for everyone else.

Hey Stinky_1, I desire an exploit or help. I'm guessing the CogSwapLoader is like a boot disk and allows you to boot copied PS2 games, right? I have a Mod already and an exploit with everything I want, but I am trying to figure out how to use cogswap (CLS.ELF) on a MC_EXPLOIT with Keylauncher to play copied games on an un-modded PS2. Is this possible? I loaded CSL but it wouldn't boot a couple copied games that I tried. It would boot and original PS2 game...

to be honest I have never used cogswap loader or cd loader. I am under the impression that they allow you to play backups just like swap magic does. It would not be dificult to make a MC exploit that ONLY had cogswap loader on it. Just take the exploit for keylauncher, stick ONLY cogswap loader in the FILES folder for the exploit. Rename COGSWAPLOADER to BOOT.ELF. This way when you stick your trigger cd in with your mc in slot 1 it will boot right into cogswap loader. then you can put your disc in. This would make it ALMOST the same as swap magic.
The problem is that you still need to figure out exactly how cogswap loader boots a backup. I think you need to put an original game in first then press X, then wait for some screen to show up then slide card the tray open then swap it for your backup. (not sure though)

Hey Stinky_1
Just want to say in advance... Great Job on on this prog.
I have been having problems getting it to work, though. I keep getting "Please insert a Playstation or Playstation 2 disc" error. I have a modded PS2 with the magic 3.6 chip. I have followed your instructions as well as as the ones from http://turdinc.kicks-ass.net/Msntv/ps2/snesEMU.html but with no success. Any advice would be great.

I need to make an updated boot cd. Some people have been having problems booting it up. It needs a dummy file added to it. You can grab any of the MC exploits that have a file labeled DUMMY and just drop that into the cd. Burn it with that dummy file and it should boot right up.

stinky sup dude,
i have a similair thing i made, only i edited cd loader, swap disc useres will know what im on about, to launch serveral different .elfs namely hdadvance, ps2os, execftp0.68,execftp0.69, hdl_svr, and some few other commands.
a few questions i have with your way of doing it, does it come up with that menu that says x, o etc. next to the elf u wanna run, also can i boot from the hdd, because currently me booting elfs form a hdd requires running 2 other apps, or 1 of my special cd.
also with dvds, yes they should work, u may need to use sonix image patcher, though thinking about it is the snes emu designed for ps2, the nes one is designed for ps1 (this will not work on a dvd).
as for the dummy files they might help, all they do is increase the file size( the amount of info on the disc). i believe the ps2 can boot discs more efficiently if the disc has a large toc, though you should have decent ones with the amount of roms on a disc.
hope i was of sum help :P

If its a new HDD you need to plug it into the PC and format it first. If its not new then you need the USB_ADVANCE HDD format tool.
Just follow this
Before Start:
To use the USBeXtreme on your PS2, you will need a USB Hard drive Enclosure with Hard drive installed (both devices are sold separately), either 3.5?? or 2.5?? USB Hard drive Enclosure with Hard drive can be use.
*For the installation of the Hard drive on your HDD enclosure, please refer to the user manual of the Hard drive Enclosure.
Hard drive formatting
If you are using a new hard drive, you will need to initial the hard drive with Windows. To initial the hard drive, connect the hard drive enclosure to your PC?s USB port and install the driver*, then go to Windows ?Control Panel? ŕ ?Administrative Tools? ŕ ?Computer Management?, find ?Disk Management? on the tree diagram. After that you will able to view all drives installed in your PC, select the newly installed hard drive, right click and choose ?initialize?, follow the on screen instruction and the hard drive will be initialize by your PC and assign a driver letter to it.
You can format the drive by using NTFS format in order to use up the maximum space of the hard drive.
If the hard drive has formatted and assigned a drive letter successfully, you will see a new drive in ?My Computer?
* For the driver installation, please refer to the user manual of the hard drive enclosure
Download the Client software of USBeXtreme from http://www.usbextreme.com/download, unzip the file and run the USBeXtreme_setup.exe file, then the tools will be extracted into the drive C. Please DO NOT change the default installation path except you are familiar with MS-DOS command.
After extracted the USBeXtreme Client software, go to ?Start?ŕ?Run?,
Enter ?Command? to start using command prompt, change directory to the root directory C drive by entering command cd\ and press enter, you will see C:\> appear on the command line after successful. You can refer to the following picture.
Then you can enter the following command.
ul_format X format
?X? is the drive letter of your USB hard drive.
The format action will take a few minutes, it is depends on the capacity of the partition you created, please DO NOT remove the hard drive or power off the USB hdd enclosure during this period.
Game Converting
To convert games from DVD/CD to the USB hard drive, please connect the USB drive to your PC, then go to command prompt ?Start?ŕ?Run?ŕenter ?Command?, change directory to the root directory C drive by entering command cd\ and press enter, you will see C:\> appear on the command line after successful. You can refer to the following picture.
Then you can enter the following command.
ul_install SourceDrive TargetDrive GameName CD/DVD
e.g. if your DVD/CD-Rom drive is drive D, and the USB HDD is E, and you are about converting a PS2 DVD game ?Metal Gear Solid?, the command will be the following
ul_install D E MetalGearSolid DVD
you can refer to the following picture
**Game converting will take a few minutes depend on the game file size.
Game Playing
Connect and power on the USB HDD to your PS2 and boot your PS2 with USBeXtreme, when you see the game selection menu, select the game and press X on the joypad, the game will then run immediately.
