hey,
everywhere ive looked i cant get a straight answer,
are purple bottom discs bad for the lens of a ps2, if i'm making backups?

Purple should be fine man, just don't use Black Discs ... not sure if it's a rumor or not ... but it's said that the black discs make the lens work 2x harder ...

No Actually the Black Disc's are recommended :) Look at your original color disc's. Black pretty much is for the PSx games. from what i understood awhile back. AR / Action Replay Disc's are purple. :)

From what I've heard, the lens working harder is because of a mod chip. These chips increase your laser's voltage (therefore making it work harder). As far as I've seen all DVD+R's and DVD-R's are purple bottom, it's the RW's that are black (and they're not even black, more of a dark grey). RW's don't usually work in PS2's. There are a few new mod chips that have firmware upgrades to bring your laser voltage back to normal. Do some research if you're looking to mod your PS2.
