Will almost any 3rd party playback kit do? Or do you all recommend only MS brand?

If you have a modded xbox you can install a program that will play dvd's without the kit and you can use your controller as a remote.
program is called dvd-x2 Dongle-free dvd-player.

Avalaunch has a great built in dvd player
