Hello greg,Usually there is very little difference between the 2 formats.
The main differences of the formats is where those backups will be played. The stand alone players decide which formats they will play.
Having a dual format burner makes this job a lot easier. I play my backups on quite a few players and haven't found any of them that wanted to play the dash or plus formats.They all seem to do both.
Rule of thumb: old stand alone players,use dash (-)format. Newer stand alone players,use plus (+).
High quality media and a sensible 4x or lower burn speed will solve a lot of playback issues.Just search around in the forums and you'll see all the problems with stand alone players trying to play crappy media that is burned too fast.
That stand alone player that you play your backups on will decide which format,brand,burn speed,and manufacturer code that it likes. If it doesn't like it,it will: Pixellate,freeze,jump,skip chapters,or just give you a "no disc inserted error".
The main differences are the manufacturers of these discs,"media". You take the same brand and quantity packaged discs in the + and - formats, They probably are made by 2 different manufacturers and the quality difference can vary considerably. This is a difficult problem of figuring out which manufacturer made those discs.
A high quality dual format dvd burner also helps out,more flexibility to solve these issues.
