Dual Layer burning problem

I have a problem with Dual Layer discs using both DVD Decrypter and Nero. I now have the DVD film files on my HD, but during burning in Nero I receive the message " Writing file to disc failed" followed by "Burn process failed at 2.4x (3,324 KB/s)". I get similar problems using DVD Decrypter but unfortunately I can't remember the message.

I'm using an Iomega Super DVD Writer which should be able to handle both 4.7GB and 8.5GB discs. I've contacted the Iomega support desk and they tell me
they're not aware of any known compatibility issues between my DVD writer and Ritek discs.

I also have the latest version of Nero and DVD Decrypter but still I get the problem. I have no problems whatsoever using 4.7GB disks but the film is over 2.5 hrs long which I'd rather not shrink hence the use of DL 8.5GB disks.

I've included the log file below.

Can anyone offer any suggestions on how I can fix this problem? I've looked at various forums, downloaded the latest software, tried this and that all to no avail.

I have a Dual Layer Sony, but DL disks are still too expensive I see no reason to copy a movie to a $10 Dual Layer disk when I can use Shrink and a 25 cent DVD+R Unless you have a source for cheap DL disks

I've managed to get some at a good price as a friend of mine gets a discount.

This doesn't make my problem go away in that I have a dual layer DVD burner that won't burn dual layer discs.

Can anyone give me ideas as to what the problem may be?

Ok after a bit of hassle I've managed to sort this problem. I have the same drive and am using the Ritek 2.4x DL discs.

First off you have to upgrade the firmware. The latest official f/w can be got from the Liteon site.

The Iomega is actually a Liteon SOHW-1633S and the file you want is the DR16BSOS.zip
Flashing is straightforward if you follow the instructions carefully.

This made the drive recognise the discs and I tried to use Nero to write to one. It wrote one layer then crashed :(

Also the sodding Iomega DVD writing programme always kicked in when I put a disc in the drive so I uninstalled that - I recommend you do the same if you have it installed.

I was about to give up when I tried writing with DVDShrink 3.2 after decrypting to the H/D with Decrypter.

I set the compression to 'No Compression' and made sure the high compatibility setting (Burn at least 30mm - or some such, under the burn tab) was checked on.

It did its decoding bit and then started writing to the disc. Layer 1 . . . Layer 2 . . . Bingo!
It produced a disc that, amazingly played in 3 different DVD players: budget LG and Philips and my Pioneer 575.

The whole process took about 1hr 20mins including the decrypting (which took 15mins)

I did this with another disc and it worked equally well. Hope this works for you.

btw if it does - perhaps you could email or PM me and maybe get me a few discounted DL discs? ;-)

A couple of firmware flashing tips:
After downloading and extracting the flash executable, reboot and shut down any progs that may be running. Close DVD43 if you have it running.
Run the exe. After it gets to 100% it takes a few more minutes till it has finished flashing. Don't touch anything until you get the success message.
Then you will need to reboot twice. After the first reboot it recognises and installs your 'new' hardware, and it then prompts for a second reboot.

Good luck.

BTW I now recall that it wasn't Nero that caused the crash after one layer was burned but OneClickDVD. So Nero may well work after all. I know that the method above works for me, so you may need to risk one of your discs to find out if Nero works ok.

I am not familiar with Nero (downloaded the demo yesterday). Can anyone give me simple instructions as to how to burn a movie from a h/d video_ts folder? TIA

Hmmmmm My newbie status is made fairly obvious by the above. :)
I only got DVDShrink and Decrypter a couple of days ago. i now realise that the process could have been made even simpler by dispensing with Decrypter and just using DVDShrink.

Also I now realise that DVD Shrink integrates Nero if you have it, so clearly it was Nero that did the burning. So Decrypter + Nero should work equally well.

The High Compatibility mode is probably irrelevant too as it has to do with a 1Gb minimum that DVDs used to require, but it won't do any harm to leave it on.

Hi,
Iomega Super DVD Writer is a stupid dvd writer which will give you a lot of headaches. i suggest you change to BENQ PRO 1620. This dvd writer is so far I consider better than other in the market.
I have used pioneer, teac, sony, nec before.
The price you paid for this benq dvd writer is definitely worth it, believe me. I speak of experience. It has the latest features that no other dvd writer can match so far just like AnyDVD software which always update to its latests.

I tried the upgrade of the Lite-On firmware last night and it works fine now. I can now make copies on to a dual layer disc. I am very happy! I no longer get the errors described above. Thank you very much timlotus.

I must say that the Lite-On web site almost looks a bit amateurish what with all the spelling mistakes and bad grammar. Not the sort of thing you'd expect on an official web site.

Of course, when I contacted Iomega with regards to the problems I was experiencing none of this was mentioned, i.e. firmware upgrades. Not surprising really as it's a re-badged DVD writer. What do they know?

However, I have seen 1 problem in that when I now play the new DL DVD on my laptop, the audio seems to stutter a little. But I don't get this error when I play the same new DVD on my Sony RDRHX900 which is what matters to me. So long as the playback on my DVD player is OK then I'm not bothered.

Unfortunately, my supply of discounted DL layer discs is limited. The guy I bought them from is more of an acquaitance than a friend. Not even sure when I'm going to see him next so I will be running out soon myself. I'm pleased though that I now have a DVD writer that can write to DL discs. Thanks once again.

Hi Guys....i found this thread of interest since i too am having some problems burning DVD DL disks...my grandson bought and installed for me a HP 630 DVD DL burner..and 3 DVD DL disks (which i have wasted already)..Now here's my understanding of this problem..
1. To make a backup copy of a DVD DL movie unto a DVD DL disk is very easy...using first DVD Decrypter and then burning with DVD Shrink (with any compression)...i did this with no problem whatsoever.

2. However....i have been trying to put 3 different movies unto to a DVD DL with no success.. IS THIS IMPOSSIBLE TO DO??? does anyone out there have an answer and a cookbook procedure to accomplish this....thank you...........tomlomeo

If you are backing up only one movie to a dual layer disk you only need DVDDecrypter in read and then write mode, Shrink is not necessary, and Shrink does not burn, Decrypter does. If you want to put several movies on dual layer you will then have to rip to your hardrive and then use Shrink in re-author mode to make your own compilation, here is an easy guide. But you are going to lose the menus in this process.
