I just stopped using my fix-it utilities/Trend-Micro scanner, and am giving AVG a shot. Everytime it found a virus, and I'm not sure why, it wouldn't let me delete it; the best I could do was either do a scan, or hunt down the file myself and delete it. They were mostly java things (and to hunt them down meant I had to enable hidden files... basically, it got old.)
8 viruses so far.

I've used AVG Free on my windows box for years and have never had an infection. If only it worked for "other" things...........................................
My killer sig came courtesy of bb "El Jefe" mayo.

NOD32 is in my opinion the best antivirus, mainly because it uses so little resources.

NOD32, Avast!, and KAV are all pretty good.
Personally, I use Avira AntiVir free edition... mainly because my parents don't want to spend money on the non-free ones.
I have used AVG in the past but have not tried Avast!, so I cannot endorse its effectiveness :D

PKGupta - your sig is way too large - both userbars are over the 50kb limit.
Joeva - your userbars are way overboard too.
Fredil - yours need shrinking a tad.
edit-
svar91 - seems yours is almost twice the limit.
venomX05 - doh, yours is a bit oversized too

I see no reason to pay for virus and spyware protection with so many quality free applications available. My personal favorites:
Avira's AntiVir PE: http://www.majorgeeks.com/AntiVir_Personal_Edition_7_d955.html Totally Vista and XP compatible
Spyware Terminator: http://www.majorgeeks.com/Spyware_Termin...uard_d5242.html
Comodo BOClean (anti-malware): http://www.majorgeeks.com/Comodo_BOClean_Anti-Malware_d5616.html
Browser Hijack Retaliator 4.5 (BHR4.5) : http://www.majorgeeks.com/Browser_Hijack_Retaliator_d4582.html
Comodo Firewall: http://www.majorgeeks.com/Comodo_Personal_Firewall_d5033.html
I run all of these on my home PC, and they are all very lite on resources as I see no lag at all. I also regular run CCleaner, Wise Reg Cleaner, NTRegOpt, ASquared, RemoveIT Pro, SUPER AntiSpyware, Diskeeper and/or AusLogics defrags. These programs don't run in the background, and I only use 'em once a week or every two weeks just to keep the PC tuned up and running clean, lean, and mean....

And, yes, I am a frequent visitor of www.majorgeeks.com (as if the above links didn't tip you off ;) ). Probably my favorite web site, besides AfterDawn of course :D
